We've always booked the sites near the bathhouse on loop C (the only open loop in the winter), sites 39, 40, 41 are fairly level. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_004688.pdf Typically Friday night everyone shows up whenever, and we set up a base camp with some EZ-ups and plastic, with heaters inside to take the chill off. The last few years it has been very cold. Saturday night is a potluck, with a group day trip on Saturday. The last few years we've gone to the National Park next door which was an iron smelting/casting operation way back in the day, and we'll find a winery. |

Something odd going on, they aren't showing any open campsites on the reservation website. The "site calendar" list of campsites doesn't show any C loop campsites at all, only A, B and D which are all closed in the winter. Going to have to call the park to find out what is going on. I wonder if they closed the C loop for maintenance this winter!

ok just talked to a Park Ranger this morning. They are closed as they are putting water and sewer in for the "Big Rigs" Several of the other PA Camp Grounds are also closed due to the same reason. Now to start looking at some private camp grounds that may be open and not an arm and leg for cost. Any ideas?< ="cosymantecnisbfw" co="cs" id="SILOBFWID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;">

Crud. And interesting, I wonder if our local PA favorite will get a water/sewer loop. I found the following: http://www.pacampgrounds.com/ Hickory Run, SW of Reading. They mention fall rates but not winter on the website. http://www.bluefallsgrove.com North of Reading. No mention on the website if they are open over the winter. http://www.sillscampgrounds.com/ Sill's Campground. SW of Reading. No mention of winter camping on the website. A search for Good Sam's campgrounds near Reading shows a dozen or so. http://www.goodsamclub.com/travel/campgroundsandrvparks/SearchResults.aspx?city=Reading&state=PA A KOA search shows 4, although none are very close to Reading. http://koa.com/find-a-koa/?s=ext#%7B%22map%22%3A%7B%22lat%22%3A40.3356%2C%22lng%22%3A-75.9269%2C%22mode%22%3A%22map%22%2C%22camp%22%3Anull%2C%22routea%22%3Anull%2C%22routeb%22%3Anull%2C%22units%22%3A%22IMPERIAL%22%2C%22zoom%22%3A6%2C%22search%22%3A%22reading%2C%20pa%22%7D%7D |

Received this via email from John Roots (reminder, replies to thread notifications only come to the mods). I'll add that I know there is at least one MD state park, I think in western MD, that is open year-round.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
How are we doing on an RV camp ground Jan 17-19? Don't know if Virginia is of interest but the Shenandoah River State PArk is open year round. The web site is http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/and.shtml#overnightfacilities Here's what the web site says:
"Camping is year-round. Shenandoah River's EW Campground has 32 sites with water and electric hookups for various equipment - tents, popups and RVs up to 60 feet long. Water at campsites is turned off when tempertures are below freezing. There's no reduction in fees - water is still available elsewhere in the park at such times. The campground has centrally located restrooms that have hot showers. Sites have fire-rings, picnic tables and lantern holders. Twenty-seven sites are back-in, and five are pull-through. Site assignment is made upon arrival, not at the time of reservation."
