Only those who camp understand the difference between trudging with bags in tow into a hotel room at the end of a day or pulling into your camp site, setting up your chairs outside your door, taking a walk to see who else (and what else) is there, and inevitably making lots of new acquaintances without even trying.

Yep. Camping to save money is probably a flawed concept; but, the reasons you mention and feeling at home in some of the most beautiful places on Earth are what keep us hitchin' up.
