Topic: Joshua Tree NP over Thanksgiving Posted: 17 Nov 2014 at 5:47pm |
We're heading to Black Rock campground in Joshua Tree NP over Thanksgiving:
Arriving Nov 27, leaving Nov 30. Anyone else going?
Might be cool temperatures, so fill up that propane!

We are trying to find a spot for thanksgiving podding as well. I thought about Joshua tree but I haven't looked at availability yet. Everywhere I have tried on the coast between sand diego and long beach is sold out with the exception of a few high class motorhome resorts, no thanks. Even Death valley (furnace creek) is sold out. I'm pretty amazed this many people do Thanksgiving in the RV. Pretty cool.
We were thinking possibly pirate cove on the Colorado River or Shoshone CA near Death valley, Haven't decided.
Maybe we will head down to the monument

There's always Anza Borrego State Park. Mostly primitive camping, but they never (ever) fill up. If you're looking for amenities, then it might be difficult, as those campgrounds fill fast. We'll be spending a lot of the Christmas & New Year holidays at that park.

Just got back. Great weather, warm and sunny. As we left there were storm clouds in the distance, so we lucked out with the weather. R-pod worked great. I'm getting better at backing it up also!

So how did the solar panels work for you and what size are they?

The solar is an 80 watt Zamp. It worked great! At night the batteries showed a voltage of about 12.2, and by noon the next day it was usually up to 13.5 or 14, depending on the amount of sun. I locked the panel to the r-pod using a long flexible computer locking cable so I felt safe leaving it out when off hiking and overnight. It sure beats using a noisy stinky generator anytime.

I hate to say this, but some people my say the same about your tow vehicle.

Except my tow vehicle doesn't run continuously at the campsite. If it did, then you'd be correct.

No doubt you don't even feel the pod back there on the big climbs with that TV... but I definitely wouldn't want to be behind you.
