Not sure exactly where to post this question...
Do any of you camp in cold weather? This is our first travel trailer and we are planning on heading to Wyoming next weekend. It is getting down to freezing at night and we aren't sure what we need to do to protect our r-Pod. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We've had a few mid-winter get-togethers around here. If you are camping mid-winter just leave it winterized and use campgrounds with heated bathrooms. Keep a gallon of RV antifreeze in the bathroom to flush if you need to use it in the middle of the night. Keep a dishpan in the sink to catch any water from brushing teeth, washing hands, etc, and throw that in the bushes. A few gallons of fresh water on the counter and a small electric heater and you are good.
Now, if the temps are dipping a few degrees below freezing for a few hours each night, don't worry about it. Keep your fresh water tank filled at least 1/4 full to ensure there is enough mass to keep it and the fresh water line from freezing.

What techntrek said.
On my 179 the supply line from the fresh tank would be the first to freeze I believe, small diameter and exposed. Fortunately it is placed in such a way as to be relatively easy to insulate, maybe with some of that neoprene split hose insulation. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Armaflex-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Rubber-Self-Seal-Pipe-Wrap-Insulation-HST05812/100550644 |

What we need is a bag we could spread under the pod and and inflate with TV exhaust. Warm air would insulate for a bit and keep cold from under. Or a skirt like a hovercraft that drops from frame and inflates.
Yeah, I know. I'm full of it tonight. Shouldn't have popped the cork on that last bottle. fred

When you enter the Camp Grounds sub-forum, look near the very top for "Free or Cheap...".

Just curious, what is the plumbing system material for the R-Pod? If it is PEX, the stuff stands being frozen pretty well, so the metal fixtures and junctions would be the only weak spots. If it isn't, I might have to consider replumbing mine when I buy it.

I think the pipes are PEX, or something similar, but aside from the fixtures and junctions, there is the water pump and water heater that you really don't want to freeze. And if you're talking about winter camping, burst pipes is a big potential part of the problem, but if your water freezes you don't have water even if nothing breaks. It's definitely not the same if you can't take a hot shower, but with antifreeze for the toilet and some bottled water for drinking and cooking, everything else is covered. I've never heard this discussed, but I wonder about frozen contents in the grey and black tanks -- not to mention the potable tank. If you are going down the road when it starts to thaw you're going to have icebergs ramming the inside of the tanks. Ice would, literally, be a lot harder on the tanks than liquid water. TT |
