Topic: Front light repair Posted: 22 Jul 2017 at 9:40pm |
Hello all.
The front light is not working at all. I'm talking about the ont near the propane tank. Any instructions on how to get access to it to diagnose the exact problem?
Thanks!

The cover just pries off. Look on the bottom of the lens, place a small flat blade screw driver there, and pry up.

Before you assume it's the bulb, take the bulb out and look at the base of the bulb for any corrosion. Check the connections in the socket too. You may need to scrape things with a pocket knife or maybe just put the bulb in and take it out a few times. Even if that's not it (and it's just a bad bulb) it's a good idea to squirt just a touch of contact lubricant in the socket for corrosion protection. WD40 will do, but there's a special product; search "electronic contact cleaner" on Amazon. You can get it at Lowes or Home Depot too.

Just to add a little bit to what TT said; if you find there is corrosion in there, then water is somehow getting in. In addition to what he mentions about cleaning the connectors, you may also want to squirt in a little dielectric grease. Something that I have used quite a lot of is something from Dow Corning called DC4. It's not the only dielectric grease around, so you may just want to ask for dielectric grease at a local auto parts store. I have gotten DC4 at a local airport shop (DC4 is frequently used under the cowl in aircraft for the exact same purpose).

That light on my TT seems to be the one that has the most moisture inside the lens. I replaced bulb with LED and applied dielectric grease to the bulb prior to install. You can check resistance on bulb to make sure it is good. You can also check the socket for power. If you don't have power to socket you have a wiring problem. On my 178 that wire is primarily in the front storage compartment. I have seen it but had no reason to do anything with it, as my light works.

+1 on dielectric grease. It is wonderful stuff that no well dressed shade tree mechanic should be without. It has many uses - light bulbs, Bargman connectors, sparkplug boots, etc.
An ounce of prevention.........

Exact same thing happened to me.
My electronically savvy son in law diagnosed using a multimeter that the switch was bad. Not worth replacing, I just use a head mounted flashlight now.
I hope this is not a systematic problem involving a lot of other people's pods.

One thing I noticed - when the Pod is level the AC drains right on that light. Just FY.

My switch was finicky after I picked up my new green 2017 179 HRD. I let the dealer know and they sent me a new switch. I have yet to replace it. Sometimes I have to click it 4-6 times before it lights. Try a shot of wd40 in the switch and then give it a few clicks. A replacement switch should be easily found at your local auto shop or you can buy an entire new light on amazon for decent price and use that switch. Good Luck!
