Topic: Wheel Bearing Service Posted: 02 Jul 2016 at 3:02pm |
My dealer has quoted $110 per wheel to service the bearings and inspect the brakes on my 179. This is a job I do not want to do myself. Is this reasonable?

That's probably in the ball park. The amount is likely coming out of a rate book. If you have any tire dealers that do service work they would probably do it for less.

+1
What is the recommended interval between these services? I would imagine that it's at least 10k miles and probably more.

Thank you, it sounded reasonable. I don't know the recommended interval but the trailer is 13 months old and around 10,000 miles since we are leaving on another 8,000-10000 mile trip in a couple of weeks I just want it done

Yeah, that sounds like good preventative maintenance, though shopping around might not be a bad idea. The dealer is usually the priciest option.

The recommended interval for service is every 12 months.

My local mechanic recently charged me $150 for 2 axles (4 wheels), including new seals.
If you just do weekend trips every summer you can go a few years between service. Definitely do it before a big trip.

I had the wheel bearings done today I thought it was $110 per wheel plus parts but was actually per axle total $146. It is a good thing I had them done as grease was just beginning to bypass the seal on the left wheel.

I did the wheel bearing service myself. Replaced inner seals and bearings Also took the lip off the d rings. This lip was causing issues getting the preload correct on the wheel bearings. Took about 2 hours to do the job. Next time hopefully 1.5 hours.
