Heading off to Assateague National Seashore in a few days and taking along a rookie. Skeeters don't bother me too much, but I don't want it to be a, potentially, bad experience for a first time camper so I'm stocking up with heavy artillery. Last May the buggers were just waking up.
So what's your favorite arsenal against those little nasty nagging nabobs of negativism consist of? Permethrin soaked clothing and dome? Thermacell? Deet? Candles? Coils? Rum? Tequila? Beer? Holiday Inn? Thanks! fred

Thermacell is what I use on relatively windless nights. Bug spray on old clothing/hat works too.

We used permethrin soaked clothes while we were in the Amazon. They worked perfectly. However, it may be overkill. currently we use DEET and citronella candles in the dome. We also use a small 110 v fan that has enough air movement to keep most of the buggers out. If all else fails, We also have a battery powered mosquito swattter that looks like a miniature tennis racket.

I want one of those battery operated zappers...just to hear the little buggers fry. I use permethrin around here for ticks and have used it at Assateague with success in the past. I ordered a Thermacell just cuz I want to see if it works as well as folks say.

A lot of the usual air-based defenses - CO2 emitters, insect incense, candles, just don't work in wind and that's all you get on pony island. Decent DEET spray is about it, IMO.

The bug zapper rackets are perfect indoors before settling in for the night. A few minutes of sweeping and they're all gone. But, be aware that those little dead bodies have to fall somewhere. Keep your food and bed sheets, clothing, covered. Shake the sheets on the floor and sweep. I had an interesting 2 nights at a campground in Northern Vermont last Memorial day. Each night there were dozens of uninvited guests flying around inside and hanging out on the ceiling. Several minutes with the zapper racket ( buy 2 for a spare) and put my mind at ease for sleeping. Worked great. No remorse.

When I feel I must, I use "OFF" spray. I am reluctant to use chemicals, as I remember watching something (History Channel, maybe) of the old days when "we" thought DDT was a Godsend. ![]() |

I do my best to try and avoid insects that bite and harmful chemicals. Living in south Florida I have gotten use to the mosquitos to a certain extent when they get too bad I try my best to avoid them.
