Split and stack wood for next year, de-winterize the rPod and get the Gravely out!
I imagine there is one or two here that have fond memories of the Gravely. Still, one of my favorite machines! ![]() |

I have seen them being used over the years, but never operated one myself. I have been using a 1971 Cub Cadet riding tractor since 1986.

Cub Cadet - yellow paint. I have always had red paint (Wheel Horse or Gravely) and green paint (Deere). Never Cub Cadet yellow, although I do remember they were always faster than my Wheel Horse! :)

I need to get my 1986 Deere (which I've owned since 87) in for a new PTO before I can do any mowing. 28 years was enough for it.

Deere's are nice machines. I have a Deere x300 (17HP - not big box model) thinking about fabricating a hitch to drag pod around. I'm sure it would pull it. Stopping it could be a problem. Wonder if a 12v break controller could be rigged?

BTW Fred, in our valley we still call Gravelys, "man-killers".

Yeah, the Gravely is a brute. Just put new tires on it last year. It only has 180 hours on it and runs like a champ. Elderly neighbor gifted it to me. I found the sulky last year too. Brings back childhood memories and helps me keep a couple of acres of "woods" under control. Not much it won't chop through. As scary as it is, it's not as medieval as the old Toro sickle mower I got! Remember sickle mowers?
I use the deere with a couple of different utility "clean-up" trailers and just ordered a Hitchin Post ( http://www.amazon.com/Good-Vibrations-170-Hitchin-Connector/dp/B003L77Z8Y ) for it. It will be fun to see if I can maneuver the pod around a bit with it. Figured I want to get the load as close to back axle as I can. Between tractor and my 200+ lbs (Arghhh), maybe I won't spin the wheels too bad. The break away cable close at hand is a good idea. Also, I think I'll put the Jack wheel for potential wheelies! Yes, I will post pictures if you promise not to laugh!

No doubt about it, a Gravely is a work horse. My Deere has about 1250 hours on it, runs like new, I'm a stickler for maintenance. I find if I run the Deere off the concrete with the pod on the back, even with agricultural tires & diff lock, I dig holes trying to back uphill. When I try to pull uphill, I get wheelies. That's why we use the jeep off the concrete.

I have a 2" ball on my Deere (a 318), which I use to tow around my big utility trailer. I did move my heavier-than-the-pod popup with it but never the pod since it is so low. Didn't have any problem with wheelies or forward traction but it definitely pushed me around when I tried to stop.
