Lots of ice on the trees last night, worst ice storm we've had since we moved to this house almost 10 years ago. Neighbors have stories of being w/o power for 2 weeks after ice storms - we lost it at 2:21 am and I'd bet it will be a day or two before we get it back. My wife and I were up at 5:15 to check on school & work status so I opened my bathroom window for a few minutes - the sky was lit up with flashes from wires going down and the woods were filled with the sounds of shotgun blasts as the limbs came down. Several large tree tops came down close to the house but no damage. One large limb shook the house when it fell on the roof (I never went back to bed but that got everyone else up in a hurry!) but no puncture through the sheathing that I can see from the attic. I'll have to call my roofer to come out for an inspection. Figures we just had the roof replaced this past spring. Then mid-day a large tree fell across our driveway so I spent 5 hours cutting most of it up so we can get out tomorrow. My Prius-as-generator system has been working well, as well as our big Generac, so we've had all the usual comforts of home. Nothing is as sweet as a hot shower when the power is out after a long day driving a chainsaw! Most neighbors won't get one tonight since we all have wells. Hope everyone else is safe and warm! |

Sounds like a exciting time, thankfully no serious damage and no injuries. The trees around your house will be thinned out with more daylight. Sounds a little like the experience of a hurricane. Hope your neighbors homes are OK and you get your power back on soon. David

Doug, we got it good here in southern Indiana also. had 5 inches of snow on the ground and then got about 2 inches of ice on top of that. Hi temps in the low 20's for the next week or so. We have been lucky so far and have not lost the power. We live in a wooded area on a dead end road and I cant believe that the 60 and 70 foot hardwoods have not fallen across the road. My 5500 watt Generac is ready to go on line if needed. the poor Pod is a covered up white blob. I am starting to wonder if it will ever get warm enough to use it.

The utility power came back around 6:30 tonight so about 34 hours without. Not our record which was 55 hours after one of the hurricanes a year or two ago. Haven't heard about any major damage in our wider circle of friends and acquaintances. Very lucky considering how many pictures I've seen online of downed trees. I couldn't imagine a 2 inch ice coating, we only had about a half-inch this time. A friend of mine who lives north of here in PA borrowed our small genset this afternoon. This summer I tried to talk him into buying a cheap one for this very reason, maybe he'll listen now. |

It was funny how many gensets appeared in our neighborhood a fews months past Sandy. Two weeks without power can be pretty convincing. Fortunately our Generac worked flawlessly throughout the event.
Yes, hot showers, flushing toilets, refrigerators and freezers become very popular. We discovered a lot of new friends we didn't know we had! :) This past storm only put us out for a couple of hours. Lucky. I think I heard there is only 40 days left till spring? fred

Lots of snow in the Pittsburgh area, but only about 1/4" of ice. I've found the best way to avoid with power loss, is to invest in a good generator. We bought a 8500 watt unit about 3 years ago, keep it in our detached shop, and back feed the whole house. We have only lost power once for about 4 hours since. We used to lose power if a cloud passed in front of the sun. The best thing about running it in the shop, is all the pests, who try to make their home there, either leave or die.

Very true, we bought our Generac after numerous outages, including during an open house we held to meet all the neighbors. Installed the genset and then we didn't have a single problem for over a year.

Joy, all the models are pointing to a nor'easter for us this Wed-Thurs. Too far out for agreement yet - one shows just rain, another up to 30 inches of snow. All those trees that didn't quite make it down because of the ice storm will come down if they get piled with snow and the wind kicks in...
