Kokopod,

Down here around the Charlotte area, if you make it this far, check out Kings Mountain State Park which is just west of us.  It is a neat campground with water & electric h/u's. decent sized sites, a dump station, hiking trails, small lake, forested and it is right next to Kings Mountain National Military Park where there was a major Revolutionary War battle for the "history" part.  Also, it's only about 15 minutes off of I-85.  Sites 40, 41, 42, 44, 45 and 46 are the best ones if you decide to stay there.
P & M ... and Comet too!

I recommend a day or two in Lancaster if you want to explore Amish land, and 3-4 days in DC for all of the free (and some not free) museums.  You could easily spend a week just there.   While there is a KOA near DC there is also a state park south of the city you could try.  There's Assateague Island for beach/horses/wildlife.  Green Bank radio observatory and the Cass scenic railroad (real steam engine), in WV within a half hour of each other.

If you need a place to crash for a night or two I have hookups on my driveway, we are located near I-83 near the PA/MD border.
