Topic: New TV Ram 1500 Posted: 29 Jun 2012 at 5:34am |
I was getting my 2010 Liberty serviced, to pass the time I looked at the new vehicles. I looked at a Ram 1500 and the low sale price $18,000. I walked around and ended up going back to the Ram 1500 three times. When I got home did some research and found several postive reviews and the next day my wife and I ended up buying the Ram 1500. It is a basic tradesman regular cab. It has the 4.7 V8 with the cargo boxes on the sides of the 6.5 ft. bed. Manual windows, door locks, no cruise control, not even a remote control. Its a basic work truck with a class IV reciever hitch and factory wired with 4 pin and a 7 pin conectors. It has a 7,700 Lb. tow capacity and a six speed transmisson with electronic gear select. Never owned a pickup truck before it is definetly bigger than I am used to but surprisingly it easy to drive. The gas mileage isn't great but I don't drive that much averaging about 8,000 miles a year. Looking forward to towing the Rpod with it and hope to get the time soon to go camping. David and Danette

Very nice, with that size engine and presumably low rear-end gearing you'll be able to tow a house. Don't forget to get some pics of your rig!

The Ram 1500 4.7 V8 engine has 2 sparkplugs per cylinder. Does anyone Know the reason for that ? I think I have heard of airplane engines having two plugs for safety but I wonder the reason for this engine and the 5.7 Hemi too has the two plugs per cylinder. Just curious. David

My guess would be to get a more even fuel burn during each power stroke.
Or maybe you can just bolt a propeller on the front and you are pre-cleared by the FAA for takeoff!

It is called a waste spark system where each cylinder has a primary spark and a wasted spark for the exhaust stroke.

Thank-you for the answer, I guess it is for a more efficient use of burning all the fuel. And that is one thing it has no problem of burning fuel the MPG is not very great.

It is for cleaner emissions, Chrysler products have always had great performance but high emmissions and low gas mileage. Waste spark systems have been around since early eightys and not all use 2 plugs per cylinder, most systems are 1 coil 2 cylinders.

Our Hemi has two plugs per cylinder, now I know the rest of the story. It also has one coil pack for the two plugs. Goose

I once had a Honda Motorcycle in the early 80's that had two cylinders and 4 spark plugs. It had very large cylinders so two spark plugs per cylinder gave it a more complete burn.
