Yes, just hold the flush valve open on the toilet to fill it up, but that can be a royal pain so it is easier to just wait until it is filled up in the usual way. We've set our LP detector off by holding the toilet open, FYI.
The indicators are crap. Pun intended. Most people have problems with theirs. I usually use the glance-down-the-toilet method if I don't believe the indicator LEDs. Once you see the water rising in the tube the tank is full and you only get a flush or two more before you are in serious trouble.
Eventually you get a feel for how long your tank will last with your own useage patterns - number of people, how often it is used, etc. With our family of 4 we can go 2 full weekends before we need to dump, or about 5 days for a week-long trip. The same is true for the other tanks - we can go a weekend with 4 Navy showers and hand washing on the fresh water tank.

We likewise just had our "maiden" voyage with our R-Pod 171 -- 2011 model. We towed with our 6 cylinder Aztec from Wisconsin to Newport News, VA and back -- over 2700 miles total. Gas mileage was about half what we normally get on the road, but we loved the experience. Generally we were the smallest thing at the campgrounds, but we still have all the amenities. Looking forward to many, many more trips. Great area to visit for history, beauty and military operations.

The canon is from Yorktown, one of the historic sites we visited while OUR-Pod waited at this great campground in Newport News. Since there are just the two of us -- semi-retired so we can travel more -- the 171 has everything we need -- a bed separate from the seating/dining area, a bathroom, refrigerator, and kitchen. Love it.

My grandsons ages 8 and 10 just got back from their spring break trip to Yorktown, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg. They loved it. Every minute was full of things to do. It sounds like you picked a great place to visit.

Our toilet black water gauge got more accurate when we started using the spray out connection almost every dump.
