Topic: Water Heater Posted: 17 Apr 2012 at 10:51pm |
A question for all of you. When you are dry camping is there a danger of running the water heater dry? In other words, if you pump the fresh water tank dry using hot water will the pump empty the water heater or is there protection built in to the system?
We are lovin' our 177 HRE!
Thanks

Once the fresh water tank is empty the pump has nothing to push forward, so your water heater is safe - it will remain filled.

If you ask me, you're just setting yourself up for an accident and a very costly one. Once your on-board tank is drained, TURN OFF YOUR HOT WATER HEATER. Why take the chance that gravity or some other force will empty the HWH for some reason?

I will have some time next week to check it out, but when the pump is off in my 2011 177 there is a light that comes on by the rest of the controls that says the water heater needs to be reset. I assumed that it is on some type of safety circuit to prevent the type of accident discussed here.

Your propane-electric water heater has the same fill-drain design as a typical home water heater. There is six gallons of water always in the heater unless you drain the heater via the anode rod-drain. If you are not going to refill the fresh water tank, turn off the water heater. Not because you would damage the heater, but because you are wasting propane/electricity to heat water you cannot use.

Keith-n-Dar, there isn't a relationship between the pump being off and the water heater reset light. As Tidalwave said, with no water and/or the pump being off the water heater will continue to run normally. You just won't have a way to get the hot water out.
