Our first attempt at trash can turkey on Thanksgiving's camping trip.
The instructions called for 1 1/2 to 2 hours for a 10 to 12 pound turkey. Ours was 18 pounds so we let it cook for 2 1/2 hours. Overcooked it by 1/2 hour, it was still moist but falling off the bone. Couldn't believe it cooked so fast. It was still awesome.
Prepare the stake
Place turkey on stake
Cover with new trash can. (steralize can first by burning)
Place charcoal on top (Bottom) and along sides.
Place potatoes and squash on coals
Cooked turkey (falling off bone but moist)
Perfect camping meal

Wow that looks soooo good! drool.
Was there room to store all those leftovers in the pod fridge?
What did you use as a stake to prevent it from falling over? -T |

We took along a small bar fridge to store the leftovers. It was either that or take all the beer out of the POD's fridge. LOL
The stake was a 3 foot long 1 inch dowel pounded half way into the ground. Next time we won't use it in the fire pit. Was too difficult to move the charcoal away from the can before removing.

mm I miss them. I used to take cub scouts to camp with the boy scouts and we had to cook. this was one of the things I would have the cub scouts make as the boys scouts would be cooking their dinner. Most of the time the cub scouts out did the boy scouts
Wonder why that would be. Here is the cooking times I used to go by: Cooking Times: 10 lbs 50 mins 12 lbs 1hr 14 lbs 1hr 25mins 16 lbs 1hr 40mins 18 lbs 2hrs 5 mins 20 lbs 2hrs 15mins 22 lbs 2hrs 25 mins |

Something else on the cooking time would depend on the tempature outside as you are cooking this.

I noticed that the pictures were not showing, too. I was looking forward to seeing this thinking that I could do it for out last camping weekend at the end of the month.
