Topic: Just to get you thinking Posted: 21 Jul 2011 at 5:33pm |
Here is kind of and interesting mod/set up for a generator that might provide food for thought for you generator users. Pictured is a Coleman Powermate 2500. And, yes, I know it’s NOT an inverter generator. One of my 5th wheel neighbors ( I have 2) bought a larger generator and sold me this a couple of weeks ago, quite reasonably. He used it a couple of seasons to run his A/C only; as this was about all it would handle. The pros/cons of using a non-inverter generator has been discussed at length here. He says his A/C still works fine. My intended use is only to recharge my batteries, via an automotive charger, during extended dry camping. This guy and his wife are retired and lifelong campers. He is constantly tinkering with something and takes meticulous care of his stuff. I feel as though I got a great buy.
Anyway, this is his mod for the generator. Off of the “normal” fuel tank, he said it would run 3-4 hours under load. With his mod, he says he could get it to run 12 hours (the “fuel tank” (gas can) is 2 gallons. He removed the original fuel line from the original tank and simply plugged it with a removable rubber cap. He then ran a rubber fuel line, with shut off valves, from the gas can to the carburetor float bowl (where the original fuel line was). In effect, he replaced the small onboard fuel tank with a larger 2 gallon tank.
He made the support framing from flat steel stock. To this he made and attached a small wood box to hold the 2 gallon can. He even angled the box so that fuel would run towards the fuel line.
Anyway, I thought this was kind of creative and might spark some ideas of your own - for those of you who use generators for long periods.

Good mod and well built. I certainly wouldn't want to get up every night after 4 hours just to refill the tank to keep the A/C going.
That is the exact same engine that came with my power washer.

Is that a '58 Chevy Impala in the background?

That's an excellant guess but, no it is not a 58 Chevy Impala. Actually it is a John Deere riding lawn tractor! I refer to it as "Lawn Assault Vehicle 1" (LAV-1).

And the Chevy is a "......assault vehicle"? I don't know why I said 58, I know better, as I was thinking post 58 early 60's. And I saw the SS emblem on the tail. It is a handsome machine, sir! oh well tricks of the mind as we advance in years!

I'd take it too, but only if that Deere will burn rubber...
