Topic: Shuttle Launch (updated with pics) Posted: 28 Apr 2011 at 9:11pm |
Quick update, we're on the train right now, east of Raleigh heading south. It was great loading up the car and knowing it would be waiting when we get to FL... and that I didn't have to do all the driving this time. Too bad we can't take the train home, but the schedule we want to keep means we are driving it back all in one shot this time. No stops in Wal-Mart parking lots like last time since we don't have the 'pod. Just had a nice dinner in the dining car and we'll be pulling down the bunks in another hour or so. That shuttle better go up this time.

Sorry for the lack of updates and pics, we were very busy down there and got home safely Saturday night. I did better on the way home, no winds to deal with so I had reserve power again (even passed someone with me doing 75 at one point) and my mpg rose to 10. Still not the 12 I was expecting.
I'll still be late getting anything up here because... we are leaving Thursday afternoon to go back to Florida! My wife talked me into going back to see the launch, now scheduled for Friday the 29th. This time we are taking a car on the Auto Train there, then driving back all day on Sunday. No 'pod this trip. I'm going to be exhausted coming in to work on Monday.

+1 on glad you're OK. Wind was a problem with my trip to the Smokys last fall. Like you, sway was not an issue. I had plenty of power to overcome the wind, but mpgs dropped into the low 9s. I had a strong wind out of the South going down there and then coming home, a strong wind out of the North - due to a strong, but slow moving front.........I got it BOTH ways! Hopefully, you won't. When I got home, I checked my weather station and it had recorded a 69mph wind speed! Luckily, all I lost/was damaged was a chimney cap on the house.

I should mention that Friday night we stayed in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Smithfield, NC. That town was one of a half-dozen in northeast NC that was hit by tornadoes on Saturday. We got out of there just in time...

And we are here! We drove about 7 hours on Friday and 14 on Saturday. About three hours of that was traffic (including sitting still for over an hour because of an accident), rest/gas stops and getting slowed down by a horrendous headwind. The headwind was so bad I was averaging 8-9 mpg per tank most of Saturday. Ouch. I was white-knuckled most of the way just trying to keep us between the lines and there were times I had to slow down to 50 because that was all the power I had w/o downshifting to 2nd gear every 10 seconds. I'm really hoping I don't have to deal with that going home.
The forecast looks great, mid to upper 80's and sunny every day. We are resting up today at Wekiwa Springs State Park. Very nice place, looks like newer bath houses, well kept, very spacious camp sites and lots of room between them. Its in the middle of a forested area so I can't hear any traffic. I'll be sure to get some pics up soon.

Camera - check. My wife is a big scrapbooker so our lives are well-documented especially on trips. I probably could tell you what I had for breakfast on the 3rd day of our annual beach vacation 2 years ago.

Well, off on the big trip tomorrow. Nearly all packed, if we didn't pack it hopefully we don't need it. Throw the pillows in the 'pod in the morning and we are good to go. The 'pod is going to work with me and we'll leave from there.
