I remember seeing something about adding them to cabinet doors, complete with pictures, but I can't find the thread. I have found the following:
- HuronSailor said he added lifts to his bottom bunk.
You could try contacting them for details. A tip for searching, if you use the Advanced Search it has a time limit on the right side which defaults to six months. Often that needs to be changed to include all posts.

The door stays I added were NOT hydraulic lifts. They just cause the door to "stay" in the open position (so you don't have to hold them open when putting in or getting out items in overhead cabinets).

One thing that comes to mind are the "lifts" or "struts' used on some hatchback model cars. Might be worth a trip to the auto parts store....if that's what you are thinking of.

yeah or even something from a furniture store maybe. just seems like it would be nice to access the storage with two hands instead of one holding up the wood.

Hopefully HuronSailor can provide details, he did exactly what you want to do. You might try to PM him, if he has it turned on he'll get an email. Here is the link: http://www.rpod-owners.com/pm_new_message_form.asp?name=HuronSailor
