Agree that the seal should hold water or antifreeze indefinitely. I leave a little antifreeze in there all winter, that stuff doesn't evaporate. I left some in an open cup one winter as a test and I swear it was at the same level that spring.

No problems there. The gate seal in the toilet flush flap is just a rubber gasket. It can dry out, and develop a slow leak. All you need to do is wet it and wipe it to make sure it's clean, then leave water in the bowl to keep it from drying out. After every trip, I dump all the water, but I leave the faucets open, and also put some chemical into the black and grey so it won't stink, I also put a few cups pre-mixed into the toilet bowl and leave it until next trip. When storing for the winter, I use RV antifreeze instead. If it's still there in the spring, I know the seal is happy.

I applied silicone plumbers grease...holds just fine now...
I guess being a new toilet, it just needed a little lube..
Thanks to all for your assistance.. 👨🏻🚒 |

Dayman,
Just out a cup of pink antifreeze in the toilet. See what happens, don't panic. |

Ugh. I did not put antifreeze in the bowl just ran it in the tank. What is the best way to inspect my seal?Fill the bowl and see if it leaks? I am assuming the seal just separates the bowl from the tank and would not be a concern for leaking on the sub floor?

My 177 holds very well. The RV anti freeze was still a couple inches in the bowl when I sold it, that was 5 months winterized. You should always put RV antifreeze into the bowl and leave it there, it will keep that seal wet so it won't dry out and slow leak.
I agree with lubrication. I put on the rubber gloves and used a cloth rag to wipe the edges of the gate valve really good to make sure there was no "stuff" causing slow leaks. If you think it's just simple evaporation, cover the bowl with plastic wrap after putting RV antifreeze into the bowl.

Vaseline can cause rubber to swell. Instead, get some Silicone Plumber's Grease. Here's a different brand of Silicone Grease. It should be better for the seals.
