I've been using a homemade Coke can alcohol stove for backpacking for about 14 years. Including fuel weight it is advantageous up to about 3 days. Many AT hikers use them since they often can resupply every few days. For longer trips or group cooking a traditional backpacking stove + fuel comes up on top.

I actually looked at that one at Cabella's last week it appears to be much better quality than the one I bought.

I, just a few minutes ago, returned from Walmart and purchased a new Coleman grill/stove. Coleman grill/stove I hope it will work out fine but, I can tell it is not of the quality of the old stuff. I don't think Coleman even made it. I recall seeing a "Sunbeam" sticker on it somewhere. I'll look more closely at it this weekend. |

It's sad all my old Coleman products are great "works good last a long time". The new items I have bought are junk. I still have forty year old Coleman lanterns and a 2 burner stove that have been used hundreds of times and still work great. I bought a portable grill last year that doesn't heat evenly is impossible to clean and has sharp edges that I have cut myself in several times. JUNK!!

I have an original Peak 1, before multi fuel and all that, a straight Peak 1 Backpacking stove. I still use it from time to time. Hundreds of tanks of fuel through it, rebuilt the pump once, a decade ago or so. We also own a 425B two burner.. pretty old. My grandfather bought it new the year I was born..

I haven't tried it in years I'm sure the wick is shot and I would have to find a replacement. I cooked a lot of meals on that stove then replaced it with a Peak One Multi-fuel from Coleman which has a pump and is much easier to light. I haven't used the new one for at least 10 years.

Addendum:
With the key which you used to control the flame you could disassemble clean and reassemble the entire stove, which was necessary every few days. To light the stove you would use an eye dropper to place some gas in the moat around the burner tube then light the gas the heat would warm the generator producing gas for the burner. This was necessary as it had no pump. Lighting this on a windy day was a true art. |

This was my first camping stove which I carried backpacking through the northern U.S.A. and northern Canadian some 50 years ago.
