Welcome. I agree about the rain, there have been many weekends we booked in advance and still went even though it rained the whole time. Using the Dome and/or EZ-ups, add some tarps, maybe a propane fire, and it is a good excuse to still get away and catch up on your reading.
Personally after experiencing pulling our pod with a 6-cylinder, then with an 8-cylinder on the Rockies, I wouldn't go until you upgrade. Yes, you could make it up the big grades. But you really want a lot of cooling power between the grade, length, and altitude. Plus of course the power to maintain speed. I ended up buying a tuner (programmer) to alter the fan turn-on specs on my Suburban to keep the engine temps lower - therefore the oil temps lower, with the final result keeping oil pressure up. Pushing the rpms to the limits to get enough power (again - higher altitude, so less power produced), you need all the oil pressure you can get to maintain lubrication.

Check the towing specifications. You may find that you have sufficient power. You may not set any speed records climbing but most major roads are not too steep and the R-Pod is not some behemoth. We are towing with a 4 cylinder, 2L Ecoboost Ford Escape. On our first trip out west taking mainly I40, we had no major difficulties as long as we took it easy. The return trip was over I10, I20, and I85. That was not bad either. Since adding an AeroPlus wind deflector and limiting our top speed to 60 mph, the mileage is even better than on our first trip without it. Air resistance increases exponentially with speed. That is why limiting the speed to 60 mph makes for an acceptable compromise for speed and economy. Increasing speed to 65 or 70 mph significantly reduces mileage as the wind resistance increases. |

Retirement and a new R-pod--sounds like a winning combination! Whereabouts are you located? Have fun!
