Let me add this.... This year has been especially deadly for our public servants - not only here, but nationwide. A couple of weeks ago we lost a firefighter in a nearby city. A few days ago, we lost yet another fine officer and nearly, his K-9 partner. Though a "retired warrior", I will always feel a kinship to this men and women. I am unashamed to admit that tears run down my face as I type this. Yes, we can enjoy our smores around the campfire, in relative safety, not only because of our military - but also because of guys like this, and a dog named "Shadow". Godspeed. You say I'm "Just a Dog" then why would it be,
if you spell my name backwards god is what you see
I have many jobs, one is protecting your life
or making sure your family's safe
when that prowler is out at night
I would chase down any man who hurt someone,
I would protect you with my life until my job is done
I search for drugs in many different places,
I can pick them out of anything
even though they come in many different phases
I can sniff out a bomb that might be in your child's school,
I would risk being blown up to make sure
your child comes home to you
If you're hurt in the woods or just lost and scared
I will search as long as it takes
to make sure your life is spared
I am loyal to my master for they are first in my eyes,
I will always stand beside them
for we are partners till I die
Of all these jobs that I do,
my most important is protecting you,
protecting your life with the risk of losing mine
even though I have never met you
So after all these things that you read,
tell me when you look into my eyes is
"Just a Dog" all you see?

Doug, Thanks for "nailing" one of my biggest peeves in life, with humanity, at work etc. When one has faced down potential death a time or two, it tends to change one's perspective on life. Much of what many perceive as a crisis and get themselves all in a snit over are really just inconveniences. I often find myself thinking "folks, if only you knew...". Problems come in life - they will be solved and pass Petty bickerings are just that Appreciate the good you find in life - it is fleeting None of us are guaranteed another day or even minute....the words you say may be the last that a person hears, in this life. If you cannot say something kind or uplifting, at least let your words not be harsh or cruel. The freedom and safety that you enjoy has been and is yet being paid for by someone -think on this from time to time.

Yeah it hit 106.5 outside my window here in central NJ. We put a small AC in the little guest room and moved the HD tv in there for the weekend. Watching " little shop of horrors" in the (relative) cool (still95 outside!). What a campy delight!
Hats off to all those who service, and those who remind us to remember!

Pee-uew-eee! You're right David. I did forget about Tech's "issue" and apparently so did he. What an appropriate picture !!!
And Tech - thanks for reminding us about what is REALLY important. It's hot - but we're still safe and secure.

My wife had this posted as her Facebook status today. I am man enough to admit I almost cried, knowing how hot it felt today in the few short minutes I walked from my air conditioned office to my air conditioned car.
I was going to complain about how hot it is...then I realized that at least: 1.) it isn't 109 degrees 2.) I'm not 5,700 miles from home 3.) I'm not dressed in a full BDU uniform and helmet and carrying 70+ lbs. 4.) there is very little chance that anyone will shoot at me or that I might drive over a bomb in the road today! Thanks to all who serve!!!

Huron, cool! David, I completely forgot about it. O. M. G. That tank is going to smell like butterflies and unicorns when I get it back next week.

Normally I would have that option, Hodge, but currently my 'pod is at the dealer. My little window unit is my only refuge if you don't count our cars.
rpodcamper - ouch!
David, I'm hoping for cooler temps next weekend, too. We are supposed to go to a drive-in theater. I'll have a fan (gotta love inverters) but that won't mean much if its like this weekend.

Took this photo downtown in our little burg yesterday at noon. One of my Facebook friends is a producer at the local ABC affiliate. She saw it there and used it on the news last night.
Notice how I managed to get both the front AND back of my index finger in the picture. Duh.
