Topic: holding tank low point drain Posted: 18 Mar 2011 at 9:59am |
yeah i guess my concern is that when the tank drains...it's not necessarily "dry" you know? its still moist in there and that would be how things grow. so my thought was without the cap on it would actually dry so nothing would grow.

I usually empty the fresh water tank when I return home and then close the valve to keep the critters out. We had a discussion regarding sanitizing the fresh system a while back
"The book" says to sanitize before each use, but few seem to do that (myself included). I don't worry much about it as I carry enough gallon jugs of "bottled" water (less than $1 each) for drinking and cooking. I just use the fresh tank for showering and dish washing.

Unless you subscribe to the fact that the propylene glycol in the RV antifreeze is an alcohol, and after sitting in the pump and lines all winter most of your system is already sanitized. The only parts that aren't are the line between the holding tank and the pump, and the holding tank. Granted, by the time you've sanitized your tank it takes very little effort to do the rest of the system, but maybe you don't need to sanitize the tank... its dry all winter so what would grow in there?
Something to chew on.

Actually, I should have said 'don't forget to sanitize your plumbing system,' not just the tank. You need to let bleachy-water sit in the pipes and faucets too.

The fresh water tank? I always leave the drain plug in. There shouldn't be anything in there to grow mouldy anyway. There are fresh water conditioners available at RV Dealerships (or Walmart) that you may want to try if its a concern.
Don't forget to fully sanitize your tank at least once per year.

I have always kept mine on except when I drain the water out. I used to open it right after dumping my tanks and let it drain going out the camp ground but then heard in some areas of the contry you can get fined for this. Now I fill the tanks up at home with my well water and then dump the tank when I get back home. I do give the tank a bleach bath in the spring when I'm setting everything up.

if you are not holding water...but there has been water in the tank...is it better to leave it without the cap on so there might be some air flow in there to prevent mold? or better to keep the cap on to keep out the road grime and bugs/etc?
