Topic: Rpod dreamer, now lover, but what do I DO??? Posted: 07 Apr 2019 at 7:31pm |
Don't forget, or maybe remember the comfort of a fan blowing directly on you while sleeping. My grandparents in Jonesboro Arkansas had no a/c. When we visited in the late 60's and early 70's it was always in the summer. Every room had a ceiling fan, every bedroom had a nightstand fan and I remember sleeping under a sheet and being a bit chilly in August. That fan that oscillated from bed to bed was a lifesaver(and I still have it...a Hunter Zeph-Air and yes it still runs perfect).
The requirements to run a fan or two all night are vastly different from running a/c. A two 6v battery bank and a large solar panel or two medium one's will keep you comfortable. Heck, you are 'camping' so giving up a/c for a trip is not the end of the world ;)

Which brings us full circle: other than possibly the dual battery install (which it sounds like you know you need and cam probably save $ if you have your dealer do it now) get out there and camp. You will quickly discover things that are fine as is and things that you wnat to change.
Have fun!

Like the others. One step at a time. You yourself are not going to know what you really want or need until you've experienced a little podding. We took ours on a couple of short, nearby trips just to get a feel for things.

I definitely will take it slower paced. As they say “one step at a time”. I have to admit it has been awesome how the forum allows input from every angle. Then each of us picks the path we want to take.

Continue to take baby steps and keep it simple. As time goes on and you become familiar with the Pod, you may want more and more challenges in making changes or modifications to it. Each person has his/her own style, preferences and technical knowledge and that is reflected in the mods s/he does. Some really enjoy putting in, what seem to me, very complicated systems the challenge of which they thoroughly enjoy. Others, like me, like to see how we can accomplish similar goals while keeping the system as simple as possible.
Go slowly, drive slowly, enjoy using your pod and in time, you'll find your comfort level.

Its not as bad as it might sound at first, but I fully admit I'm a solar and dc power nerd. I did this kind of stuff professionally for nearly forty years . But, I'm far from being the first in the RV world either, most of what I've got in mind has been done before, check this out for example:

Wow. Now that sounds awesome. I will be honest, where I’m at in the rpod indoctrination. You literally made my head swin. I’m still taking baby steps. I just now started to spell generator correctly (thank goodness for spell check).
What your talking about is not just major surgery. Sounds more like a heart transplant.

I'm currently still just on the standard dual golfcart battery setup. The upgrade plan would include the following steps:
remove roof air and replace with high efficiency minisplit (twice the efficiency) (about $1000), condenser goes on the A frame and the evaporator goes above the bed. remove the golf cart batteries and replace with a 5.2kw 24V Lithium pack salvaged from a wrecked Tesla, readily available from multiple sources (located under the bed) (about ($1300) add a 2kw 24V to 120V sine wave inverter to run the a/c (about $400) add 1kw solar to the rpod roof (now that the a/c is gone) (about $500) add an MPPT solar charge controller (about $200) add a 24 to 12 dc/dc converter and a small 12V battery to run the 12V trailer loads (about $200) add two 12 to 24Vdc dc/dc converters to recharge the Tesla battery from my tow vehicle (about $500).
Yep, major surgery is required but it should be a fun geeky project.
