I think people have done that, and it makes a lot of sense in many ways. If you really want to use the dining area as an auxiliary sleeping area, then the multiple-piece mattress would seem to be a problem. A single futon mattress would be much better when laying flat, as there would be no seams. The big issue is finding one of the right dimensions. Say something like 75x54?

MDP.....Please keep me posted on what you find or decide on. We do not have an IKEA type store in our part of the state. Wayfair.com has a lot of choices thou.

BTW, we bought the shorter IKEA futon, which is considerably lighter, more comfortable, and provides two points of egress for our cats to the "tunnel" behind the back (the back slopes). That was a couple of years ago and I know IKEA has changed up the models a little since then.

Thanks for the information, this is a mod I want to do. With just the wife and I + dog we would be best served with a couch that actually works. We don't take the table anymore and use a small fold up table for eating in the pod. It would be great to have a comfortable place to sit and on the occasional visit from a guest, somewhere for them to sleep.

No. We can either pull the back toward us or pull up on the seat to trigger the next position. We usually do the latter because it's easier.

Was there any conflict with the futon frame opening mechanism.
