What model R-Pod? If you are asking about a modification for an R-Pod 179, then look in my mods (link in signature, last two pages), you will see what I did instead of a futon.

The 179 is easy to do the futon mod on: just buy a futon and don't attach the legs. You can get fancy with attaching rails if you want, but it's not necessary. We added straps to keep the futon from sliding off the bench while traveling, but that's the only accommodation we've made for it.

We just put the futon frame on top of the bench the cushions were on. Very easy mod.

Oh, we did add a couple of 2x4s on the front edge of the frame to take up the space between the futon and the ottomans (without cushions).

Was there any conflict with the futon frame opening mechanism.

No. We can either pull the back toward us or pull up on the seat to trigger the next position. We usually do the latter because it's easier.

Thanks for the information, this is a mod I want to do. With just the wife and I + dog we would be best served with a couch that actually works. We don't take the table anymore and use a small fold up table for eating in the pod. It would be great to have a comfortable place to sit and on the occasional visit from a guest, somewhere for them to sleep.

BTW, we bought the shorter IKEA futon, which is considerably lighter, more comfortable, and provides two points of egress for our cats to the "tunnel" behind the back (the back slopes). That was a couple of years ago and I know IKEA has changed up the models a little since then.

MDP.....Please keep me posted on what you find or decide on. We do not have an IKEA type store in our part of the state. Wayfair.com has a lot of choices thou.

Hello! This sounds like a perfect idea. I was wondering, after looking on line at futons, could one just get the futon mattress only or is the frame needed!? I would like to try this but also want to do it Right!!
Thanks in advance!!

I think people have done that, and it makes a lot of sense in many ways. If you really want to use the dining area as an auxiliary sleeping area, then the multiple-piece mattress would seem to be a problem. A single futon mattress would be much better when laying flat, as there would be no seams. The big issue is finding one of the right dimensions. Say something like 75x54?
