.... and if you offer something for sale and you get an email inquiry in which they offer to pay you asking price, sight unseen, by cashier's check and want it shipped to Texas or some other exotic place, hit the delete key. The scam is they send you a cashier's check for too much and ask you to send a refund of the over payment, usually several hundred dollars, then you find out the cashier's check was a forgery.
When you deal with Craigslist always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch.

I have sold hundreds of items on CraigsList and purchased a few also. For many years I have met individuals either at my home or if the item was small enough and they felt more comfortable I would meet them at a local Wendy's restaurant. Met a lot of nice people and had no instances where I felt uncomfortable. Take the proper precautions and you should be ok.

Yeah. Anyone remember when SkyLab was going to fall from space and no one knew where? That was before the internet but it still got a lot of media coverage. I had a neighbor out in the very rural country who was scared silly that it was going to land on her house and kill her. Craig's List seems the same way. Still, dealing with anything of value, and the money involved, with someone you don't know would always call for a heightened level of caution. And maybe this is just the internet talking too, but it sure seems like there are a lot more wacko nuts out there now than there used to be. TT |

Life is full of risks and ultimately you have a 100% probability of death.
A few examples for risk of death in one's lifetime*:
Motor vehicle accident - 1 in 114. Air and Space Transport incidents - 1 in 9,821 Contact with hornets, wasps, and bees - 1 in 63,225 Firearms discharge - 1 in 6,905 Lightening strike - 1 in 161,856 * source - National Safety Council. Though common sense is needed for Craigslist interaction, just as it is needed when you go to the mall to buy a pair of shoes, it isn't likely that Craig's list poses any extraordinary risk that is disproportionate to other human activities. According to a an article in All Business, the chances of being involved in a crime related to Craigslist is 1 in 2,000,000. That's almost as safe in riding in an elevator which is, last I checked, for receiving a treatable injury is about 1 in 3,000,000. Because of the electronic media, especially the internet, we are bombarded with information that we erroneously extrapolate to the point that we become afraid of our own shadows. The solution: Go out and enjoy life and don't worry about stuff so much. |

Good point, Furpod. Not preaching paranoia, just being careful. Sure this guy with the car knew 1000 times this goes right. He was a police officer, so sure he was confident. He's dead now. Not about the 1000 rights, it's about the one wrong, if it's you. Last year the site passed 100 murders and there is an active site that tracks crime on Craig's List.

The important thing to remember is..
Thousands and thousands of CL transactions happened the same day, and they all went fine and well. |

I've only conducted one transaction on CL and it went smoothly. I sold my two Ryobi 2200 generators to raise cash toward the purchase of two Honda EU2000is. Appropriately, we met in a Home Depot parking lot during the day. I demonstrated that the generators ran before cash changed hands; I even plugged in a load.

I forgot earlier that I got my Pod on Craigslist. I'm not defending CL, and I'm really sorry about your deal gone bad -- you posted details of it recently -- but there are good deals to be had.

I fell for a scam for a Casita listing on Craigslist. That is how I ended up with our RP-179. My wife and I are much happier with the R-Pod than we would have been with a Casita. Still, it was an expensive lesson in not falling for something that would seem to be a good deal without some means of verification and eyes-on. The so-called "escrow" was part of the scam.
The perpetrator(s) may laugh now, but there is a Judge before whom he/she/they will stand that won't accept the excuse that it was only a "rich American" who could afford it anyway. |
