Topic: Replacement tire question.... Posted: 24 Aug 2016 at 1:25pm |
I have a 2012 RP177 that I purchased last spring. It is the Hood River edition with the gnarly off road tires. These tires seem a bit senseless to me as there is really no need for such a tire on a travel trailer, and I would assume that the rolling resistance is greater, theoretically detracting from my mpg. So....I'm thinking about replacing them with a good trailer tire. The size of these tires is 235/75-15, which is not a size available trailer tires. The closest size is 225/75-15 which is a bit smaller. Has anybody else on this forum made this switch? Is the size close enough not to be a big deal....?
Thanks in advance....

I don't see any issue, you will lose 10mm (.4 inch) in width, and about 2mm in ride height.

The difference in mpg will be unmeasurable. Keep them until they age out.

And "age out" would be what, 5 years....? It's been about that as the first owner bought it in 2011.....

There is some controversy in the tire world about that. MOST recommend 5 years, some 6 and a few, with no evidence as to why think 7 is OK. We did ours at 5 1/2 or so. If you loose a tire at speed, you loose a fender too.. and sometimes more. The date code of manufacture is on the side of your tires.

I almost purchased that size tire, but then I remembered I'd have to get a new spare tire also because running that size tire with a larger sized spare tire may cause harm.
This post explains what I ended up with:

On a non-drive axle, as a temporary spare/situation, no worries at all, it's a minuscule difference in size.

Also a smaller tire = less ground clearance. Important (to me) when going off the pavement.

I'm curious, do people rotate their TT tires (including the spare)?

Never heard of a Podder doing it. I have read a few double or triple axles Airstream owners claim they do it. We never have.
