Topic: Roof Spoiler Caulking Posted: 31 Aug 2014 at 2:47pm |
Any recommendations for what type/brand of caulk to use on my roof spoiler? I plan to add some for insurance in the gaps between the screws.

Can someone post a picture of this gap? I looked at my spoiler and can find no issues. It's just surface mounted on the roof with the holes for the screws and lights sealed. I want to see the problem you are having with yours so I know whether or not there is something I need to do.

Some of the pods will develop a gap between the spoiler and the pod, in between where the screws connect the spoiler to the pod. If it happens you need to run a bead of caulking along the edge so water doesnt get in.

I'm confused, unless the spoiler is concealing a seam in the roof, why would it matter if water gets under it?

In other words, it appears to me to be no different than sealing my license plate. Please educate me where I may be misunderstanding the importance of this.

It is usually covering a large hole where the wires are coming out.

The spoilers that were added as part of the recall had the wires run up the edge trim.

I see you own a 2015 model that was equipped from the factory with the roof spoiler.I noticed myself that the plastic spoiler tends to deform where the screws enter the body. Mine is still OK,but yeah, keep and eye on it.I would recommend almond colored or clear Silicone.GE is my preferred brand as it is pure and lasts a long time.RV stores have a similar product for more $$ and works just as well. The wires exit the body under the factory spoilers (not retrofitted ones) so very important to make sure it stays sealed

I looked at the rear roof line on our POD when I made the light bar and noticed that where the lights where to be mounted the roof kind of dipped inward. In making the light bar for the POD I kept it light and thin so it had the ability to flex somewhat. Using marine epoxy to secure it to the roof I have not in 3 years had any problems. In looking at the spoiler/light bar that FR is using I believe that it may not have the ability to flex or bow as the roof sags with age and this is why there is a problem with the spoiler pulling away from the roof. That or the adhesive that FR is using is not designed for what it is used for in high heat or wet areas. Goose

The best bet for the factory light bars would be to remove it, fully seal the wiring penetration, then not worry about sealing the bar itself. You may find after removing the light bar that FR already sealed that opening.
