Has anyone stored the spare tire in the cabin under the bed, in a 179? We have found that it fits there and doesn't block the furnace. We are trying to free up the back of the TT to allow for a bike rack.

I wanted to put a cargo carrier on the back to carry things like the spare propane tank and gasoline for the generator--things I did not want to carry inside either our Escape or our EscaPOD. While the spare tire does not block the furnace directly, I think it a bad idea to have it where the hot air from the furnace can heat it up. Spare tires have been known to explode. Having a potential bomb inside the R-Pod is a bad idea. I wouldn't be a fan of storing the tire inside because of the smell. In such a small place it wouldn't take long for your unit to smell like a tire shop. If I was looking to relocate it my first choice would be underneath. ------------- 2016 R-Pod 179 |

Having been a tent camper for many years, one of the things about the POD that is so rewarding is the speed and ease of set-up and tear down.
As such, I really do my best to make sure that is as easy and efficient as possible. That includes not having anything stored inside the POD that will need to be removed to get inside of our use the POD, say to use the toilet or boondocking for the night. So for me inside storage will never include tires, bicycles, solar panels, canopies, etc. |

Nothing in these pics is stored inside the pod, this is an outside compartment.

The bars are a bit too long for the space available. They will need to be shortened. When this is done, the holes are also cut off so new ones will need to be drilled. You will need a hacksaw or jigsaw with a metal blade to cut the bars. You will need a drill with the appropriate sized bit to drill new holes. A drill press would be helpful. Lacking that, some method of stabilizing the pipe while you drill is very helpful. Center-punching the place to drill and starting with a smaller bit can make that part go easier. That is about it. Fastening it to the frame is no different than the instructions specify. In my case, the pivot end needed to be close to the bottom of the frame. I don't trust screws, so I used stainless steel bolts, washers, and locknuts to fasten all parts to the frame. Try to get it so that the bars are level and the spare has room to fit. I could tell you my measurements, but that does not guarantee that they will work for you. I kept the cover for the tire and have it on the tire even though it isn't strictly needed. It stays on well and seems to keep the spare cleaner. Our 182G did not come with a rear spare tire mount and the spare came installed in the rear storage compartment. I know its not quite as close to the interior as under the bed, but smell has not been an issue. ------------- 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2017 Rpod 182G |

Depends on what you tow with I tow With a full size truck with airbags and did not notice any difference. Iv'e seen guys with generators and even a storage shed with gen,spare tire,and shelving on the front. I went with a spare tire carrier that a guy sells on ebay. it's ~ $20 but does require that you remove burrs and paint it yourself. That guy also sells various RV & towing related products so not hard to find there. Mounts on tongue with common hardware bolts. TSC is cheapest for those. I bought a bike rack for rear as plan is a Vespa in the truck bed-not bicycles. |
