Topic: New to it all!! Posted: 21 Feb 2015 at 1:17pm |
Hi All, After 3 years of driving my friends and family (and maybe myself) crazy. I finally did it! Put down a deposit on a 2015 182G. I used to go rv-ing growing up and am excited to get back into it. Will do a few local overnight trips in March but am looking forward to attending some of the upcoming events out here on the East Coast. I will probably have a thousand questions!

Hey All, I'm 2 weeks away from taking delivery! Thankfully I pushed it out from this Monday to the 20th!! I have a few questions. I know there are several threads about must haves, but I'll be doing a lot some solo rving and and planning on hitting quite a few national parks. I've already added extra battery with disconnect, but I'm now thinking a generator is a must. I'll be going 3-4 days max and will be "working from pod" in locations that I can get good cellular. I'm going back to the dealer this weekend to visit my pod and also make sure we are all on the same page as far as what's being added prior to delivery. So in addition to the extra batteries, should I consider electric Jack? Generator?

JC15, Welcome from southern Virginia!!
I'll be going to Ohio in a few weeks to pickup my 179 (Piddle Pod).
I am seriously considering adding an electric tongue jack because I will be using a WDH. So that means when I hookup I will be jacking up both the Pod & my TV.

Thanks Grandpa Hiker!! I almost did the drive to Ohio but settled on Reines RV is Manassas, VA. They couldn't meet the price but came close enough to deter me from making the drive. I'm towing with 2014 Tahoe that came with Tow Package and was told I didn't need WDH or sway bar.

If you're going to be gone 3 to 4 days max, and mainly (or at least, frequently) staying at national parks, my opinion is you won't need a generator. I believe two batteries (group 24?) should give you four days of careful battery use.
New Pods come with LED lighting, which helps on the battery use. The biggest drain is the furnace, so use it sparingly. If you need A/C, most generators won't run the A/C, at least without modification (from what I'm told--never tried it, and don't often need A/C). And besides, most national parks restrict generator usage. Some don't allow them, while others restrict the time when you can run them. You could recharge your batteries via your tow vehicle, if you need to.
As far as electric tongue jack, I've personally never seen the need for one. Raising the tongue with the factory crank is not hard, at least for this 50-something, anyway. But you can always go with the cordless drill adapter for cranking up the tongue, as well as the stabilizers.
Finally, you state you don't think you'll need a WDH with your Tahoe, which is probably correct (although some may say you'd benefit from one). But you likely will want to consider an anti-sway bar. The Pod wiggles enough at highway speeds, especially when semis pass you (and yes, get used to being passed by semis, since you probably won't be towing above 60 or 65 mph).

Thanks for the advice Mountainrev. The dealer did say similar thing about the anti-sway bar and my friend said that its an easy add-on to do.

Recently replace a 2005 Tahoe with which we towed our 171 over 15K miles. Although with the longer wheelbase and weight of the TV you probably won't need a WD hitch. That being said, I did find an anti-sway device to make life a little easier while towing. Good luck with your new toy. Safe Travels.
