You can also use "sail slugs" many owners have. |

If I redo mine, I will purchase the Keder rail insert. That will allow me to make my awning a little wider and will probably help me to slide the awning into the rail easier also.

You'd have to sever the rail and run it straight back until it intersects the roof. Even with that, you're looking at well less than a foot of extension past the door on a 179. In case you hadn't guessed, I've been doing some planning. |

The gearing of the hand crank is very low.. LOTS of cranking to get it out. It's very sensitive to angle, coming in and going out. The mounts on the side of the camper seem iffy, and using the legs as ground mounts doesn't seem much better. I would guess it would take almost as long to get this out and set up and staked down, as a dome does, with almost none of the usefulness of a dome. And since it is only going to be secured to the ground, and/or pod in a couple places, I suspect it will be way more vulnerable to wind damage. Now these are just my opinions and observations of the production prototype at Goshen. And I am an admitted fan of the dome, although I tried to be as neutral as possible. YMMV. |

Looks like I will stick with my homemade awning. It is hard to see how a straight awning could cover the door adequately. Mine goes to the end of the rail and curves with it to provide some protection for the door. If I do it over, I will try to make it longer to cover the door better and also to provide more protection for the window on the other end.

It looks like the awning doesn't give you much shade and doesn't look very strong. I think we will keep our dome.

Most of the aftermarket ones I've seen are a minimum of 8 feet long. They would just barely fit on the longest R-Pods (e.g. 179 or 180) with very little cover over the door.

Having played with the prototype.. I am betting people won't like the awning anyways.
