Camp Grounds : Ocean Pond in Osceola NF

    Author: EchoGale
Subject: Ocean Pond in Osceola NF
Posted: 19 Oct 2023 at 1:17pm

I have a new favorite spot near where I live in Jacksonville that I thought I'd share with folks on here. It might be particularly helpful to those traveling seasonally up and down the east coast or anyone specifically visiting Florida. Ocean Pond is due East of Jacksonville off I-10 near Lake City.

It is not near the ocean (about 1 hour) and I'd call it a lake rather than a pond but in any case it's a great spot. The sites are first come first serve so they aren't booked up like other Florida spots. I always get a great spot mid-week mornings. I'd say late in the day Friday or Saturday might be harder but otherwise it's never been a problem. There is actually some dispersed camping nearby so if you ever got there and couldn't get a spot...

They have one loop with electric and water, another with only water and then a third they call "primitive." Decent bathrooms with showers. a "beach" area that was part of an old Florida resort back in the 1930s, and a boat launch. Several of the sites are on the water and I can usually get one where i can keep my kayak right in my site. It's Forest Service so the prices are great (I think $30, $20, and $10) and about half that with a senior pass.

Also nearby is the Olustee Battlefield and museum which was the site of the largest Civil War Battle fought in Florida and they have a reenactment every Spring.

If you're thinking about going, post on here and I might zip on over there to say "hi" with my new camper. I have been doing that a bit lately becuase its easy, close and very beautiful--I even commuted to work from there a couple of weeks ago.

Julie

I just checked for availability next June - nothing in G. H is pretty full on the side closest to the beach but the back side of the loop is fairly open. I prefer the back side because there's less sand everywhere.

Maryland lost a few vertical feet of beach, someone at Cape Henlopen said they lost close to 6 vertical feet in places. For a couple days we had 20-25 mph winds steady with up to 40 mph gusts.
Makes camping interesting.
We did see that video of the Residence on Cape Hatteras, we used to stay at the Cape Hatteras KOA for several years which was just down the road.

The noreasters are very often worse than the hurricanes. That one was particularly bad because it hung out for many days and tore the place up.

Not sure how bad the Delmarva got hit but several homes were lost on the OBX, and many more were damaged. Most of them are oceanfront vacation rentals so I don't think anyone lost their permanent residence. Still, getting your beach rental house taken out of commission right at the start of the high season is not a good thing.

Sea level rise and beach erosion are increasing rapidly on the East Coast. Much better to have an RV that can be relocated inland than an immobile building IMHO. The campground infrastructure and roads often get taken out of commission for awhile, but all that means for an RV'r is that they have to pick another destination that season.

We sold our house on the OBX several years ago and moved to the mountains. Not going to get ocean flooding at 2700ft elevation...

Our first stop was a week at the Assateague Island State Park
Campground! We did hit that coastal storm for a couple days by all worked out well. Then we did two weeks at the National Seashore Campground. Both had great staffs and lots to see and do. We then headed up to Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware.
Nice areas, great restaurants and lots of nice people. Worth trying if you are looking for places to stay in the area.
