Which tow vehicle would you choose? : I tow a 179 with a 4.0 Tacoma...

It's probably similar to the 4 runner you are looking at. I've towed it from San Diego to Yosemite and mammoth mountain, it can be sluggish on steep grades but overall does fine. I like the Tacoma because we usually go four wheeling at our destinations and I can get to more places in a smaller truck, also pulling into tight mountain campsites is a breeze. That being said I'm starting to think about getting a Tundra. I have two growing kids a dog and all our gear which includes 4 bikes. Everything fits well now but it's getting cramped. If it was just my wife and I would stay with the Tacoma.

Several trips to the Colorado Rockies over some of CO's highest passes on Interstates (Wolf Creek, Red Mountain, Monarch, etc.). First, it must be 4WD. Don't even think about it with FWD or any front wheel drive for that matter. Second, my Pod was a 172 which is close to the lightest Pod available. I selected the 172 knowing I would be towing at altitude. While the 3.5L Pilot does OK on level sea level roads, altitude and incline take their toll. The Pilot/Pod combo will work in the mountains, but you won't be the first to the top of the pass. Install a transmission temperature monitor and watch it carefully. Tow in D3, not the two OD gears 4 and 5. Climbing the hills there were times I was in 2nd gear going 20 MPH but I got there.
I don't know of any current model of Diesel engine suitable for towing that is not turbocharged. They should not struggle in the mountains. Even naturally aspirated gasoline engines struggle in the mountains. The 2L Ecoboost Ford Escape we had until recently had better power at higher elevations than the 4L V6 that is in the Frontier we have now. The difference is the turbocharger. Nissan's specifications say that the engine will lose 4% of its power for every 1,000 ft. in elevation. At 6,000 ft, that loss would be approximately a quarter of the power available at sea level. The turbocharged Escape did not display this power loss. I would expect a turbocharged Diesel to also work well given similar circumstances.
Author: JET
Subject: 9535
Posted: 26 Mar 2017 at 10:18am

I recently bought a new R-Pod 178 and needed to upgrade my Ford Escape 4 cylinder to a vehicle that would be more appropriate to tow my new trailer. You will obviously get a great range of answers for what you should get. There is probably no one right answer although there certainly are some wrong answers. I think it would be easy to have a knee jerk answer to get a full sized/full frame pick up or SUV. The answer depends on your individual needs and preferences. For me I absolutely did not want to have to add an extra vehicle to my garage designated for towing my R-Pod. I wanted to replace my Ford Escape with something that would be an appropriate "every day" driver that I could use also to tow the small percentage of the time that the R-Pod would be in tow behind me. That...for me...pretty much ruled out almost all vehicles that weren't unibody construction. Long story short I ended up buying a 2009 Toyota Highlander 4x4 with factory tow and a 3.5L V6 engine (only 47,000 miles). It has a factory stated trailer tow capacity of 5,000 lbs. We installed a good electric brake control and use a weight distribution hitch. It gets reasonable fuel mileage, is a joy to drive, and I don't feel like I am driving a big truck that would be totally unneeded 98% of the time I am driving it.

My wife and I just returned from a trip from our home in southern Oregon to Joshua Tree California. This trip is approximately 800 miles each way and crosses many passes and higher elevations. We hit high wind conditions of 30 mph gust, drove in 90 degree weather, climbed passes that were miles of fairly steep accents and descents, etc. etc.

I can tell you that with our experience I couldn't be happier with my choice of vehicles. Our Highlander could not have towed more flawlessly. I drive 65mph most of the way, but at times got up to 75 mph and could hardly tell I had a trailer behind me. Also I never felt any negative reactions to the higher winds (I also have a sway bar), went up all the passes without trouble, and all in all couldn't be happier.

So, a full sized truck, or larger type SUV would do the job. If you do decide to go to a smaller unibody SUV, with factory trailer tow, use a WDH (and probably sway bar thrown in for good measure), has a factory rated trailer tow capacity of 4,500 to 5000lbs, I think this will also be a great choice and you don't necessarily HAVE to go to more of a "truck" if that is not something you necessarily want in everyday driving. For others who want a truck anyway, then obviously that will work splendid also.

Good luck. It sounds like the vehicles you are considering will work fine.

John

I had always steered away from trucks because I thought my wife would not like one. The funny thing is, after we got the Frontier, she said that she didn't object to them. Had I known that, I might have gotten one earlier. One other factor was mileage. Since we don't tow all the time, I wanted something that would be fuel-efficient for the times we are not towing. The Escape met that need. However, the Frontier is more versatile since we can use the bed to store things we don't want inside such as gasoline for the generator and a spare propane tank. We have a hard tonneau cover over the bed, so it stays dry.

I am definitely leaning that way because it has far more towing power than the other ones; my wife's not crazy about a truck hence the dilemma...

My basic math skills and understanding lead me to believe that my 182G (w/o AC) is roughly 3600 lbs with water and camping stuff. The Toyota is listed at 5,000, Jeep 6,200 and the Ford is +7,000 depending on the engine flavor and tow package.

Is the rule of thumb to add 20% to the RV weight jut to be safe? I have also seen some comments where people are adding basically a 1,000 to make sure that they are not choosing an underpowered vehicle. All mountains and hills this way so I definitely want to be safe. I have a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer now that is rated for 5,000 but pales in comparison for the torque out of the modern engines (But she looks super cool towing the R-Pod!) and it struggles a bit on mountain roads.

I am using a Nissan Frontier now after using a Ford Escape initially. I would say that the F-150 would be a good choice since these have the Ecoboost (turbocharged) engines. The advantage is that they do not lose power as one goes up in elevation. This is like the Escape's Ecoboost engine. When we were operating at 6,000 ft, we still had power where the current Frontier loses 4%/1000 ft of elevation. The difference becomes obvious so if you will be operating in mountainous terrain, the Ford would be a good choice.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one where I would recommend you go for the Diesel engine if you can. It will be a much better choice for towing. I don't know about the 4-Runner. If it is turbocharged, it might be a good choice. The best thing is to go to the manufacturer's web sites and search for the towing specifications. That will be helpful as you decide which will best meet your needs.
