 It sounds like your mechanic has his own personal opinion. Tow with what you have that will do the job. The Frontier is used by many people to tow trailers.

If at some point in the future you decide you want a different or heavier or better rated tow vehicle, then that's what you will do. It's all personal.

I mostly agree w/ JET. It's not much trouble to find someone who will tell you not to tow anything unless you have a Cummins diesel under your hood. You can pretty much believe your owners manual over them any time. Not that 385 hp & 900 ft lbs of torque wouldn't be nice...

I was in the auto business 43 years before retiring. I dealt with repairs and mechanics daily for 43 years. I would not care one iota what one mechanic's opinion is in your scenario. I would put much more stock in what the engineer's that designed the truck at Nissan rate the vehicle at. It is OK. We towed with a 2009 Frontier for 2 years before we traded up for the Titan. Both are good tow vehicles. I have been towing my 179 for 2 years now and about 10,000 miles with my 2010 frontier and no problems at all. tows nice and no issues with tv.

A WDH would help with the radial stress on the rear bearings, but if the specs say the TV will handle the tongue weight, then you shouldn't have any issues and any failures should be covered under warranty. I tow a 21' Camplite, which is more than 1000# heavier than a Pod, with a 2013 Tacoma with no problems at all. So far it's racked up more than 30,000 miles towing. With a towing package, WDH/SC, and a 4L engine it's no problem. I would get a second opinion. We have a Nissan Frontier. It tows the R-Pod just fine. Team it with a weight distribution/sway control hitch, and you should not have any problems. Don't sweat it. I wouldn't tow with it either, but that doesn't mean it won't do the job just fine. Just means it wasn't built at the Kentucky Truck Plant.  LOL

I went down to the mechanic this morning. For an issue on another vehicle. While i was there, i said, hey, can you just take a quick look at my Nissan Frontier and see if there is anything i might want to address before i start towing with it. He said, " I wouldnt use that vehicle to tow a trailer" .  I pointed out that i have 6100- 6500 pound towing capacity. He said he wouldnt recommend that truck, or a Toyota Tacoma, for pulling even a heavy duty utility vehicle. He says wheel bearings, and rear end cant handle it.  I know there are several people with these vehicles. Any such issues with yours, or someone you know? I really hate this whole " whats the right tow vehicle " crap.
