If you have anything other than the 3L V6 and the factory tow package, then forget about it. See this guide from Ford for details:
http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/12FLRVTT_EscapeJul1.pdf

In addition to the trailer tow package, you will need to install a trailer brake controller. The Escape is not pre-wired for this, so you will need to order both the controller and the installation kit. You will be able to tow with the Escape, but you will likely find out that you want something with more power. The 179 and 180 push the top end of the Escape's capabilities. I have a 4L V6 in the Frontier we use now and it has a 6,100 lb tow limit. I find it to be limited, especially at higher elevations. The Escape will be okay at low elevations and relatively mild hills. However, it will be lacking at higher elevations and steeper climbs.
