If it looked intact, I did not mess with it. If it was cracked, I cleaned the old sealant in that area plus some of the surrounding area with denatured alcohol, then applied new Dicor sealant to the cracked area to fill the cracks. This seems to be a good way to seal without using large amounts of sealant.

When I installed, and recently removed, the vent cover, I just removed enough sealant around the screw holes to fit the brackets, cleaned the areas, and sealed them. When I remove the brackets, I did likewise to seal the screw holes and around where the brackets were. I removed the cover since our escaPOD will be going to the factory for repairs and I wanted to remove as many non-stock items as I could before it leaves here.

The sun's UV rays will with time degrade the gelcoat and the top will eventually grow brittle and crack. Cleaning and applying a protective coating to the top of the R-Pod is not the easiest thing to do. However, it can extend the life of the roof. Besides, when the roof is being cleaned is a good time to inspect the lap sealant for cracks and to clean and apply more lap sealant as needed. If you never look up there, you won't know when a potential leak is developing.
