Author: Wat3rdog
Subject: 9280
Posted: 04 Feb 2017 at 9:08am

This year has been a very warm winter. Albuquerque itself can in the coldest times get below zero in the dead of winter but more typical is in the teens. If you are in northern NM then you will get colder temps and snow with the higher elevations. Abq sits at 5,000 ft. But if you head south to say Elephant Bute or White Sands near Las Cruces then it's not too bad. Probably 10-15 degrees warmer down that way. This is our first camper that I want to cold weather camp in. Great thing about NM is all of the different terrain depending on which part of the state you're in. I absolutely love it here.

The southern states can get cold. A lot depends on elevation. At Fort Huachuca, we were at about 5,000 ft in elevation. We got snow in the winter at least a couple of times. While I was in Korea, my wife told me that a storm had shut down I10 through eastern Arizona and New Mexico. On our recent trip, we had sub-freezing temperatures across New Mexico and Texas that was enough to freeze the water lines. They did thaw the next day when the temperatures got up to freezing.

The good thing about the southwestern states is that the cold is not going to stick around as long. It may dip into the 20's at night, but it usually goes above freezing during the day, especially at the lower elevations. At the higher elevations, cold and snow stick around. That is why you find ski areas like Taos, NM or Elk Ridge, AZ.
Our busy schedule means no camping with it until maybe at the end of this month. First thing I will be doing to it is mounting my steel lock box on it for the battery with a disconnect. We are so excited as we have been researching and planning for probably the last 2 yrs.

You'll see me mostly on FB as Tim Jewell.
