If you have the time to go and pick one up out of your area, you can sometimes score a better deal.  We've bought two used units.  First one was about 250 miles away, the second was almost 700 miles.  Both times we got them considerably cheaper than anything closer.  In-depth conversations with the owners and pictures will tell you almost everything you need to know.  You just need to use your intuition and judgement to determine if they are reputable.  I felt that buying from someone on this site or the Facebook RPod Owners Group gave me a higher level of confidence.  Both of these allow you to search their prior posts and see if they have had issues and what type of owner they are.
