I have a 2017 and a Roadtrip. Campingworld sold me a quick disconnect that I just screwed in where the cap was in the rear on the line. I had to just remove the regulator from the Roadtrip with pliers because it is glued and put the same disconnect on it. Bought a hose and I am all good. Sorry for the delayed reply. I got it to work with a different setup than listed above. It was clear one of those parts was wrong upon receipt, and would not adapt. The setup I went with is simpler. As I said, my understanding of pipe fittings is next to nothing. After realizing the parts wouldn't work, I randomly saw a different part on Amazon that perfectly suited my needs and used me in a different direction. My working setup is as follows:

Weber Q grill

Weber 6501 Adapter Hose (standard 20 lb propane hook up)

Onlyfire 5042 QCC1 ACME Nut Propane Gas Fitting Adapter with 1/4 Inch Male Pipe Thread, Brass

Mr. Heater 15-Feet Propane Appliance Hose Assembly

Anderson Metals Brass Pipe Fitting, Coupling, 1/4" x 1/4" Female Pipe

Camco 59903 Propane Quick-Connect Fitting - 1/4" NPT x Full Flow Male Plug

I've already tested this and it works. The caveat, is I think the label on the 2017.5 model is wrong. I get a smaller flame from the grill and while camping in off/on rainy weather at 45-50 degrees, I couldn't heat the grill over 300 degrees. Still cooked great (a feature of the Q grill), but not as fast or hot as a direct propane connect. I inspected the trailers gas line, and the quick-connect seems downstream of the regulator, in series/in line with the camper propane accessories. There is no Y-connection coming off the tank.

I still like the setup, but I intended to use a portable gas fire pit with the quick connect for areas that don't allow wood burning. My guess is the flame/heat would be unimpressive. I may mod the tank connection to turn that into a true high pressure connect. We'll see.

Anyway, my above setup with work for any grill that connects directly to a propane tank. Hope it helps someone!

As someone stated earlier, this thread seems to be filled with conflicting advice from pre-2017 owners. I'm new to the forum and R-Pod in general, so I may be wrong. There is definitely a sticker at the 2017 quick connect valve stating "DANGER: HIGH-PRESSURE PROPANE QUICK CONNECT." I haven't inspected upstream of this valve, but I assume it's connected with a Y, directly from the propane tank.

I've had similar difficulty with trying to find an appropriate setup for my Weber Q which contains a stock regulator on the grill, downstream of the propane tank and hose. My knowledge of gas fittings is non-existant, but this is the system I will test out this weekend - listed in order of connection. My guess is if I knew more, I could trim 1 or 2 of these connections, which I would prefer, but I already own the Weber 6501 Adapter hose, so it's about 50 dollars extra from my standard direct to 20lb tank setup in my backyard. I think this setup (the last 3 connections) will work for any high pressure grill with a standard propane connection.

Weber Q grill

~~Weber 6501 Adapter Hose~~

~~Onlyfire Universal Fit Propane Tank adapter POL to QCC1~~

~~Mr. Heater Propane cylinder fill plug with a 7/8" Female POL~~

~~Camco 57282 10' Propane Quick-Connect Hose~~

I'm going to attach the threads with a gas approved pipe dope. The PSI of the Camco hose matches the Weber adapter hose (350PSI), making me think I'm safe for pressure requirements. If anyone thinks the above setup is dangerous, let me know! Seems straightforward to me (after 2 days of internet searching). Hopefully all the adapter sizings are correct. I can report back after this weekend.

TylerK9 - The CAMCO 59123 is a 4 port brass tee kit with 2 hoses to allow those of us that do NOT have an available quick disconnect to hook up to propane source, it works from the tank. It allows for use of propane accessories and an aux tank attached at the main tank.

I have watched Kymooses video and he modified a Q to work of the low pressure line supplied with his earlier RPod.

As far as the new ones with LP disconnect, it should be simple to look at where the line is attached to the propane line, if it is downstream from the regulator it is, same pressure as going to the appliances. IF it is tied off ahead of the regulator it is high. Amazon sells the required parts as does a number of RV places, also think there is another post on this from Jan 15 that mentions a site www.caloreeequipment.com. I'm a Weber fan. Harkening back to the original question--has anyone connected an external gas grill to the new LP quick-connect built into 2017 R-Pods like our blue RP-180?

If so, can you share which grill you are using and what additional connectors are needed? I'm having a hard time figuring out what information above is for pre-2017 R-Pods that don't have a built-in quick-connect, and what actually applies to a new model like ours.

One thing throwing me off is that, based on the thread above and its location downstream from the regulator, I assumed the quick-connect was low-pressure. But there is a warning tag on ours that says "DANGER: HIGH-PRESSURE PROPANE QUICK CONNECT"

Couldn't find any information about this in either the generic user manual or online at Forest River. Hoping this forum can help before we do our shakedown trip next weekend at Elephant Butte Lake, NM.

I bought a CAMCO 59123 4 port brass tee adapter from Amazon. Mounts on tank, your Pod propane system connects to it. It has a 12' hose that connects to it that will run your grill or other propane accessories. The 12' hose is compatible with any grill that uses the small bottles. You can purchase an adapter that will allow you to connect to a portable fire pit for example. The 5' hose lets you add an auxillary tank, if you want to run off another tank and save your mounted tank. Pod People,

So you have a Y at the tank. One side goes to the standard POD propane system and the other has a hose on it that goes to the grill. I take it that hose is not 20' or so. That is what I took from your posts. You didn't connect into the existing propane system and you didn't remove the regulator from your grill.

Forgetting to turn off the grill will use the propane. Disconnecting the hose from the grill should not empty the hose and tank as it should have a valve inside like the 1 lb bottles have to keep it from leaking. Having it connected with the grill shut off also should not cause it to leak propane if the grill's valve(s) is/are working correctly.

Edit: I just remembered that you had removed the regulator and added a quick-connect. My apologies. That would leak the propane if disconnected. However, if the stove's controls are working, leaving it connected should not cause any leaks if those controls are working properly.

one minor correction to Mccarter's post above--
we do use a "Y" connector at the propane TANK-one side goes to the pod regulator and then on to the pod gas appliances. the other side of the "Y" has a hose with a standard 20 pound tank fitting and it then goes directly to the regulator which is attached to our small portable grill . this is the end of the hose that has the same fitting that the 1 pound bottles would fit into. We found the hose at a grill store.

It works well. the "Y" will supply propane only if there is a connection to it. thus, if only one side is being used by the pod and the grill side is not connected to a hose, there is no propane flowing through the empty side of the "Y". the only downsides that I forsee is the possibility to forget to turn off the grill or to disconnect the hose and it then leaks out all of your propane.

Thanks Mike. The quick connect that is on the pod is downstream from the regulator so I understand it is low pressure already. The gas grill has a regulator on it that has to be removed before you can hook up a hose to it. I need the correct hose and connector that will connect one end to the pod and the other end to the gas grill with the regulator removed. Am I understanding it correctly? Suggestion - Amazon sells a 6' Adaptor Hose to connect 20lb tanks to grill regulator. Weber 6501, $24.19. Not that complicated. I have Weber Qs, that take a 1 lb bottle. The regulator is on the grill. If I want to use a propane tank, I add a hose that adapts to the regulator then goes directly to the tank. One end is the same size as a 1 lb bottle hook up, the other is a standard tank adapter. The regulator is in line. They sell them at Lowes's. Pod People said he uses a Y connector, one end connected to Pod regulator, one outlet available to go to grill, same deal, it goes directly to the regulator on the grill. If you have a grill or anything else, propane run, that doesn't have a regulator in line, you need a regulator. we use a "Y" connector that screws directly into the 20# tank. One side is connected to the pod high pressure line going to the pod's regulator. the other side is connected to the line going to our grill. Our small travel grill has a regulator that fits between the grill and a one pound canister. We connect the flexible rubber gas line between the "Y" connector and the grill regulator, thus, the pressure is reduced appropriately. We have used it many times without problems. The hoses are available in many gas appliance or grill stores.they come in various lengths-we have a 6 foot hose that is long enough.

But I think we may just get a "normal" grill, not do the conversion, and just throw our spare propane tank in the back of the truck. This way we can get most any grill (not decided what yet) and just connect straight to the bottle. Hate not using the connection on the RPodthat they nicely add now, but the up side is if our main LP bottle runs out while camping I'll have the spare bottle in the truck to fall back on.

You can get a "T", that attaches at the mounted bottle, before the regulator, and gives you a second hook up point there, then you only have mess with the "spare" bottle if you empty the main..

I just looked up the "coleman roadtrip xcursion".. that uses 1lb propane bottles, which means, as delivered, it's a high pressure grill. The regulator is built into the grill where the bottle screws in.

So your saying, if i hook up my low pressure recommended grill (brand new coleman roadtrip xcursion) to the new external quick disconnect on the tongue of the rpod, it will be low pressure at that point? And it will be no problem?. Just for knowledge sake, is it dangerous to hook a low pressure grill directly to an unregulated 20 lb tank?

Your road trip will work perfectly. Everything "this side" of the regulator is low pressure.

I don't know what would happen if you hooked up a grill that is designed for low pressure to the high pressure side, it's not actually possible without doing a series of like 4 adapters.. They do make grills for the high pressure side, and "T"s to pull from the high pressure side. You can convert as needed also.. all grills RUN on low pressure, it's just a matter of WHERE the regulator is.

I too am hoping to use my quick connect L/P external hook up on my pod (17.5 models come set up with it now) I'm hearing there are two types of systems, 1 is high pressure, and 1 is low pressure. You need to know what the trailer connector is, and what your grill can take. I guess a high pressure trailer connector, feeding a low pressure grill is a bad thing. You may already know this, and can continue on, but incase you didnt, i dont know if you could end up getting hurt. Can a resident expert kick it in from here, cause i'd like to know if this is dangerous, and what should be done.
