Our cat Fender doesn't know it yet but he is about to become a camping cat!  He doesn't like the car!  Any suggestions on how to make him ease into camping?

Be a neighbor.  Go over and calmly point out the dog and your complaint, and remind them that you are not involving animal control or the police at this time - you want to work this out as neighbors.  Most of the time they are not even aware of the problem, especially if they are at work all day.  This approach has worked for me here in rural Nevada, good luck! 

And at least when you do involve the cops, you can honestly tell them you tried other ways before calling them.

Almost every campground l have been to prohibits leaving dogs unattended in the camper for that reason (barking ) . lt is in fortunate that a lot of dog owners ignore this regulation and then wonder why campground refuse to allow dogs. I am a former dog owner and always took my dog with me when l left the campground. I missed out on a lot of hikes because the dog could not go on a trail but l would find other things to do with the pet were he could accompany me or not do it. That's what a responsible pet owner does. Now days many attractions offer pet care while you are doing their activities (such as whale watching at Bar Harbor,Maine). It was not available a few years ago. We travel with two Yorkies.

We recently purchased a Petsafe no bark unit. It operates off a 9 volt battery and has a 25 foot range.

Nothing for the dogs to wear, but it emits a high pitched tone only they can hear if they bark.

Our dogs DO NOT like the tone and it took a short amount of time for them to learn that barking = annoying tone.

Just please be considerate of the fact that not everyone enjoys your dog(s) or the mess he makes or the barking he does or the times the inconsiderate owners feel that "they" don't need to leach their dog.

... and let me add, if you're one of those people reading this right now saying "Oh, they're not talking about us.  We know our dog is good/quiet when we leave him/her in the camper when we'll take a stroll".................. YOU'RE WRONG.  Your dog is in fact barking and whimpering most of the time your're gone.  It only shuts up when it senses you're approaching the camper on the return trip.

Sorry for your loss. We had our 12 year old sheltie, Angel, put to sleep two years ago and said we would never have another dog as it was too painful to let them go. Didn't last long. We now have two shelties in our Pod, one is a barker and the other quiet as a mouse. Camping was just not the same without a Sheltie.      After 12 wonderful years with our Sheltie " Monty " we had to put him to sleep 12 days ago. They do bark but they make great companions for camping. Sounds pretty good!  I used to keep a water dish at the edge of our lot when camping.  Dogs get thirsty when walking the campground!Tongue
