My down comforter serves me well on cold nights on the Oregon coast. No heater at night. I've actually bought a tiny little 110v elec. heater/fan that is quiet and if terribly cold at night, warms the trailer on its lowest setting. I'm a ceramic heater fan when possible, meaning pedestal power available, much quieter and serves purpose. We've camped in our R-Pod when the temperature was 4 degrees along with a significant wind chill. We had to use gas as we did not have electricity available initially and then we had electricity, but no electric heater. We stayed warm enough. At night, I turned the thermostat down and then in the morning, turned it up. We also have a Mr. Buddy Portable heater although at the time we had the Little Buddy which I returned because it was so top heavy that it kept tipping over. I ran that some in the morning to help heat things up. I made sure I had sufficient ventilation when doing so. I'm not sure how an electric heater would have done at those temperatures. Just a suggestion. When we need heat we use a small electric heater. Electricity is free at the camp site. Saves on gas. If we need a lot of heat then we use the RV heater. So far we have not had to use it. Turned it on once to make sure it worked. If you are using a full hookup site, invest in a Pelonis disc ceramic heater. They have a thermostat, are very quiet & efficient. We have noticed the furnace is rather loud also. I do like the grill and awning w/ light. Not enough to buy it, but I like the style. Somehow the design looks vaguely familiar.. Ha ha.
We do most of our cooking outside under the awning, so I could appreciate the grill. First, I agree with others that it helps to leave the A/C set to low overnight (we went back to Auto during the day). And if you have full hookups (or are on a generator overnight) use an electric cube heater instead of the propane furnace.

I will retract the Jayco statement and say instead, that I would not consider any RV where any connection to the black water system is in close proximity to the drinking water connections.

Agree with not having black water connections in the vicinity of drinking water connections. Before the purchase of our pod in 2011 we did enjoy our Jayco 1160 popup of 18 years. I don't like that. Black water connections should never be anywhere near the drinking water connections. That is a good reason not to consider a Jayco product.

I can understand the logic of the black water flush location on the door side of the 179. The vacuum breaker needs a place to be mounted so that if it leaks, it will not harm anything. The location on the wall of the shower is the most logical place. Have to agree on the power awning. I think this would really help. The fan I purchased can be run on 8 D cells or plugged into 12V. While I have used it on batteries, for the most part, I use the 12V connector I installed. It is a RoadPro RP8000 fan. It isn't the cheapest or the quietest fan and the output is adeequate for our purposes. However, if one wants to use it to stay cool, one of the ones with more than three blades might work better. Most of the time, we have it set to the low speed where it is adequate and not too loud. High speed moves more air, but is louder. However, for our use, the sound of the fan is a plus as it helps cover the off and on of the heater.

When we camp in weather that cold our furnace does come on a fair amount. I think a lot of it is due to the fact of having a couple windows open about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and then having one of our 2 overhead vents open a wee bit to cut down on the moisture buildup. When we leave everything closed the furnace doesn't run near as much but we end up in the morning having very wet walls, windows, and our sheets wet around the perimeter due to excessive moisture. Never tried running a small fan, that is a good idea. We normally get 3 good days out of a battery before switching it over to the other one (we boondock a lot). Will have to see how much running a fan will cut down the longevity of the battery. Can't complain about our 12v deep cycle group 24's though. Purchased March 2011, will normally take them to 1/3 soc before changing to the other. Still performing well, even after 5 and 1/2 years.

Thanks John in Idaho for the response. Someone had recommended that we use light weight sleeping bags with a sheet and pillow. Perhaps we are cold weather wimps because we needed the heater, it was 34 degrees outside. The rPod stays fairly warm without using the furnace over nite. We have sleeping bags instead of sheets but with real pillows. And runner rugs on the floors. About 6am one can reach up and lite off the furnace and have everything all toasty by the time the coffee quits perking. One doesn't linger long for nite time forays to the facility.

One thing that helps us is to run a fan. The constant noise of the fan helps mask the on and off of the heater. We place a fan at the base of the bed near the wardrobe in our 179. That helps pull hot air out from under the bed and circulate it better. By having it at the wardrobe side, the other side is clear for cold air return.

The second thing (if you have a 179) is to sleep with your head toward the wardrobe end, not the dinette end. This accomplishes two things. First, your heads are farther away from the heater. Second, the wall helps cut the noise from the AC unit.

Third, when you run the AC, set the fan on low or high. Then the fan will run constantly instead of cycling on and off and switching between low and high speeds like it does when it is on auto. The compressor noise is minimal. The constant fan noise is easier to get used to. I also took the shroud off and put a piece of thin closed-cell foam on the sliding cover inside. That seems to cut the noise some also. I put a piece on each of the end flaps also, but I don't think that did as much as the bigger piece on the sliding cover. I made sure it would still slide properly. If you decide to do this, there are more screws holding the shroud on than you would think. They are front and back, inside the side covers, and two more sets in the perforated section. I think there were eight in all.

Otherwise, you will get used to the sounds in time. It is like sleeping next to railroad tracks. After a while, the sound becomes normal and you don't notice it.

I wish the R-pod made a Quieter heater and AC unit. They are both very LOUD for such a small trailer. If anyone has any easy solutions for this problem I would welcome the advice. Don't forget, that microwave is also a convection oven.

The regular gas "range" has been retrofitted by several owners now.

Adding the pluming on the gas line for an outside grill costs $20 in parts.

As Doug said, the rest will be on the next generation of pods coming out..

Some of those things will be available in the latest pod iterations.

Something to consider with the full range + oven, it will take up a lot of storage space, but you can always put things in the oven when it isn't being used. We do. Just be sure to remove before preheating... did that at home years ago with a decorated gingerbread house sitting in the oven....

Something else to consider about removing the microwave, there are 2 ways to use a camper. One is to camp. The other is to tour and use it as a mobile hotel room. We've done a lot of both over the years and love to use our slow cooker when camping. But out on the road after a long day exploring a park or city it is nice to come home and just throw something quick into the microwave.

I want the 179, and shall have one. But in researching and looking at different campers I have decided there's a few things I wish were done differently. I'll probably get a 2017 179 and down the road make these changes.

First, I love the big kitchen, but I'd have done a full range and oven instead of the cook top/microwave.

Second, since I'd no longer need the microwave (who would cook in a microwave when camping?) I'd like a full refrigerator instead of the 4 cubic foot job.

Third, the Jayco Hummingbird has 3 things I wish the R-Pod came with, power Awning (with LEDs), Power Tongue Jack, and the Outside Grill Mount and propane hookup.

So that would be just about the perfect camper for my wife and I ... someday I may just have it all put together that way.
