The jury is still out on the Ecoboost twin turbo technology as it's only been in the F150 since 2011. My 2014 F150 3.5 Ecoboost has been powerful, quiet and smooth except for a solenoid replacement for the trans at 19k miles. It has the perfect tow rating, power delivery and payload to haul the GrimPod (as were calling her now) The mileage is exaggerated as mine has a lifetime average of 15.6 (empty) over about 15k miles. The mileage plumments to 11 ish when towing but that's fine with me as I am never "that guy" who holds up traffic when crossing the Cascade Mtns here in Oregon. 302K miles on the standard engine is not surprising to me. The question is what condition would a 3.5L EcoBoost be in at 302K ?

I'm not so worried about turbos. The improvements in metallurgy and lubrication technology should greatly increase the reliability when used in gasoline engines. The Army has run turbos on diesels for decades. The technology isn't new, but it certainly has improved.

I expect my Escape with 2L Ecoboost engine will hold up well. I really would rather have gotten a small Diesel. I saw a video with a British version of the Escape (Kuga) that had a Diesel. I really would like it if Ford were to bring the Diesel over here.

Like I said, I'm really on the fence here. I like the idea of the turboboost and the engine certainly does have impressive specs. That said I still believe getting more HP out of a smaller displacement must require more revolutions and/or more force, leading to more cylinder and bearing wear. It may be too soon to really see the long term longevity effects, but I'm open to arguments. Overall I see and industry trend to higher and higher RPM ratings for smaller and smaller engines. Some are now being rated at 6000+ RPM. That can't be good for longevity. Look at where the Diesels run. BUT, I'm keeping an open mind, what's left of it. I'd still like to own a 150 someday.

I learned a long time ago that sometimes, you just have to go ahead and do some things. You will feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete it. With this, make a good template from the inside trim ring and use that as your cutting guide. Use masking tape to protect the finish. You will be amazed what you can accomplish if you don't let yourself be intimidated by the thought that you might goof it up. Yes, you might. However, if you take care, measure and cut carefully, and make sure you work carefully, you can do it.

Before upgrading I took the 172 and Pilot to the Rockies for a month, including some of the highest Colorado passes accessible by paved road. I took careful notice of how it worked, knowing I would be increasing my trailer weight by 1000#. I concluded the 3.5L was marginal, but manageable, for the 172 but more would be required for the Camplite. I upgraded to the Tacoma 4.0L and added the supercharger just to compensate for altitude. On level ground without altitude the unaided 4.0 would have been fine. 

For you the Ram or F150 would be great. I'm a Ford man, but still on the fence Ecoboost vs 5.0L. Ecoboost is Ford's attempt to meet Government MPG mandates and still retain performance. I had XM with the 172 and used their home kit. It included an antenna with suction cups. It worked as well as expected. The Pod is fiberglass so doesn't attenuate signal too much. You could also use one of those little XM antennas that you can hang inside the window of your pod in the meantime, I used one at my house for years until Pandora came around.

The 3.6L will struggle in mountains. Those reporting great success with the GC have the V8s. My experience with a 172 and Pilot 3.5L was it was quite adequate on level low altitudes, but the Rockies were a challenge. Pulling a parachute (trailer), climbing a grade, and altitude are three strikes against a small engine. It worked, but I was in second gear at times. Check out my mods for the door window. There are other postings about it also in the forum. If you have (or are willing to purchase) some tools and are willing to tackle this, you can install a window in the door yourself. Two options are a round, porthole style window and a rectangular window that can open. The rectangular one is what we chose. The hardest part is getting up the nerve to cut the opening. The actual installation is not too difficult. Removing the door and laying it flat is very helpful, both for cutting the opening and installing the window.

As for XM, where do you find that the Jensen radio is capable of XM reception? None of the Jensen models I looked at on the Jensen site have that capability. The trailer has a connector for satellite, but that is for a satellite TV antenna. One would still need a satellite TV receiver to use it.

Edit: I just looked at my unit again. There are two possibilities. One is that if you have an Sirius/XM receiver that can connect to the Aux input jack, you could use it that way. The second is if you have an Sirius/XM receiver that has Bluetooth output, you could connect via that. Otherwise, I do not see any way of playing Sirius/XM through the Jensen unit.

The Jensen DVD/Radio in most 2016 models do not have XM capability, my AWM968 does not. Look on the front of your Jensen for the model #, and I can look up the manual and let you know if your's has an XM antenna jack.

We do like our Grand Caravan, it has the Pentastar 3.6 engine that puts out 283 horsepower. It give us usually 13.5 mpg in Vermont  and 15-16 once we get down to Massachusetts and below. We do really well in the Green Mountains of Vermont. the White mountain in New Hampshire and have been in the Poconos in Pennsylvania.We have not tested it out in the larger mountain out west like the Rockies or anything out that way. We have plenty of power for getting on the interstates etc.

I see you have a Dodge Grand Caravan, do you find it tows the trailer well in mountains?  We haven't done any high elevations yet but sometimes feel the Jeep is struggling with lower ones.  It could be just us as we have not towed before because everyone says the Jeep should tow 179 just fine.  Just wondering.
