I lived in N. Cal.  That's some the best camping I've ever done in my life. I can't wait to take my family back. Year round camping is unbeatable. Don't leave the pod behind, Storage may be expensive in the LA area, but it's worth the cost compared to the enjoyment you'll have camping within 200mile radius of LA.
