I'm wondering if there will be a lawsuit on Jayco for the hummingbird. I looked at one as well and they are a straight copy.

I am glad it caused FR to add the standard awning and power tongue jack though. Wink

Check this out! I almost bought the Jayco Hummingbird! Exact floor plan as the 179, just different interior coloring, etc...

It even comes with an awning. We decided to go with the R-Pod because it was cheaper, the Jayco we looked at was 21,000 OTD with tax,title,license.

Yes, competition is good for the consumer, but IP theft is not. It stifles innovation. If FR paid for the R&D to bring a product to market, which is no small cost, then Winnie should not be able to siphon away sales. Why would FR ever bother to bring out something new if anyone can just copy it?

What Winnie did is not competition, it's theft. In my opinion. I'm glad I didn't reward them for it.

Until this morning, I was convinced that the Winnie Drop was re-branded from Forest River. They are very nearly identical.

The tie-breaker between which to buy was this forum; I always try to find good peer-level support on complex products. Having learned about Winnie's duplicity (see what I did there? Smile

) I'm convinced I made the right choice.

What Winnie did is not competition, it's theft. In my opinion. I'm glad I didn't reward them for it.

I think that most of us enjoy the process of free debate and exchange of ideas. It can be enlightening and thought provoking. I don't think any of us would want to discourage that, in any way. However, I also believe that most of us are committed to engaging in this in a courteous and respectful manner.

This will be a very interesting suite to watch. Although the merits of the case have yet to be decided, I did look up who is the bigger dog. FR has 60 manufacturing plants and employs 11,000. The gross revenue for FR shows to be $3.8 B. That is just FR. Seems they have very deep pockets. Winnebago although not a slouch grossed about $980 million. This is going to be a battle of the titans. It seems to me that FR as the aggrieved party will ultimately win this case. Keep an eye out on this one. For those who have the urge to read it, here is the link to the actual civil complaint that was filed in US District court. We'll see how "frivolous" it turns out to be. Note they are requesting a jury trial.

I DIDN'T say you were a dealer. I said the guy from STE WORKS at an RV sales place. I know, I have met him. Heck, I've camped with him. His site, focus and openness all changed when he went to work "in the industry".

Didn't for minute say you couldn't or shouldn't express your opinion. But since you apparently don't own a pod now, I will have to just guess at why you continue to remain in the community, just to talk bad about the pod...

I have been inside the a-liner, and the FR version, they are not screw for screw, nor letter for letter the same. In fact I have been inside several different A-Frame style campers. We thought hard about buying one.

And, since it's America, the fact that A-Liner didn't choose to sue, has no bearing on what OTHER manufacturers may choose to do, or not do.

When I was in school, we defined "competition" as "building a better mousetrap".. not running down to the hardware store, getting a box of Victor's finest, and then just making copies, and calling them "Torvic".

A ten spot still says that very soon, we will learn of the end of the Drop. They will languish on lots just like the MPG.. still some "new" 2011 MPG's out there.. saw one on RVT just last week while researching our next TT.

LOL.. I LOVE it when people quote or link to STE, regardless of the reason.. you know he is an industry shill and works at a dealership, right? A dealership that of course, doesn't sell pods but does sell.. that's right, drops.

He also is no longer a small trailer enthusiast, having sold his Scotty and bought some behemoth.

And frivolous this lawsuit isn't, the trailers are EXACT copies.. hell, they even used the same letters in the name.

A Camaro is a lot like a Mustang, but you can't just unscrew and replace parts between them. I have been in a 178, and 1780. Exact copy. And please don't let that bit of prior case law get in the way of guessing who will win.. just run down to your local dealer and pick up a new Heartland MPG.. Oh wait..

Looks like someone at FR stole the jigs for RPod and sold them to Bagawino.

My vote goes to FR as well. For those who would purchase the Winnie Drop, they would be getting a one of a kind since there wouldn't be that many produced. I looked at the Winnie Drops at a local dealer and they are well built, I am thinking Winnebago is going to lose the law suit against them and there will be some good prices for discontinued Winnie Drops. They'll probably come out with a Winny drop "Columbia River" edition too for the westerners.

Or perhaps a "Deschutes River edition".

Maybe even a "River of No Return" edition.

Or maybe even a " S#~t creek" edition, sold only in Florida. (Just kidding, I love Florida and will be there in Feb. for the Daytona 500 and some beach time).

Hey, if Warren Buffett doesn't feel threatened by it and sue them (his corp Berkshire Hathaway owns FR), then it's no problem and who really cares?

Ugly red paint job to my eyes, but I do like the interiors, they remind me of a place where I've been before.........it is a pretty sincere form of flattery to nearly exactly copy something someone else has created.

It would be very interesting to see a photo of the 1960s vintage Winnebago you claim that these evolved from, and that FR copied with the Rpod. Go for it.

I guess if you want to get technical, the tear drop Winnebago of the early 1960's did copy other travel trailers before they came out with their unit. My parents had a 1961 Shasta that was similar to the later built Winnebago and what is really amazing is the 1954 Vakashunette - Winnebago took a lot of their styling and copied it as they built 'their' tear drop.

As they say "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." And you do have to admit, the R-Pod came out in 2009, this style of Winnebago (copied from the Pod) comes out over 5 years later, with an near identical floor plan and slide out? Who copied who? The answer is obvious. Thank you Winnebago for a grand imitation, however I will stay with the original, and better . . . R-Pod.

Winnebago made a trailer like this back in the 1960's long before Forest River rpod came along. Who copied you??

The drop is even coming out with a chuck wagon version soon.
