Sounds like good advice, Cody. We'll make sure we have the generator gassed up, plenty of food/water, and doggie treats to wait it out if we get caught somewhere and it gets bad.

Interesting question about chains on the Pod.  My first thought was, "Of course not," but then again, when you engage the trailer brakes the last thing you want is for the trailer wheels to lock up and start going sideways. 

I tend to like CodyCountry's advice if you're in anything very serious, especially if you're in Wyoming. 

I have an FJ too, and have towed trailers, but not my pod in the snow.  I get up to the Smokey Mountains at least a time or two in the winter, and now that I recall, there was a bit of snow one time.  I did the abundance of caution thing and was lucky not to have any real challenges.  There was "snow" but not a lot.

Plan on having plenty of time for your trip to pull over and wait it out if at all possible.

Lisa,
I can tell you from forty plus years experience driving around Wy that you don't want to be on I80 in Wy pulling an Rpod (or towing anything) on the snow.  It's usually very windy to go along with it, the semi drivers are mostly NUTS these days (witness the videos from last April west of Cheyenne, below).   If you need tire chains, you shouldn't be towing.  If you are towing on slick roads with chains on, going about the max 40 mph you can run with chains, you will get run over by a semi or other driver.  80 mph speed limit on many sections.   Plus we have the highest winds on any interstate system.  Watch your weather forecast, and just don't get out on slick roads in wintertime.   Park it.  They will melt off.

Haven't used chains for 40 years, had a 4wd since. Generally, if you have 4x4 and M&S tires, they don't make you put chains on, it's your call. You will not need them on the trailer as far as I have ever noticed.

(btw, that's not here.. but in the Sierras near where my parents live  :) )

Thanks everyone for the responses. Sounds like we'll be ok and I'll remember to adjust the brake controller if needed...one more thing? If it gets ugly and we have to put chains on our FJ, do we need them for the Pod, too? Or if we get to where we need chains is it time to pull off and camp for a while?

I have driven through light snow with no problem. Just a huge degree of caution. My biggest issue was with the salt and sand that sprayed up on the R-Pod. I haven't towed my pod in the snow, but do regularly tow a trailer with my snow machine on it up to the lake for ice fishing. I travel at a reasonable speed, with no sudden turns or fast stops. I have not done this with a trailer but, I did do it once (not by choice) with my old 5th wheel. The day that I needed to go home, it decided to snow a few inches.

At the time, I was using one of the less expensive "timer" type brake controllers. On the way out of the park, I adjusted it so that when I manually operated the trailer brakes (on the controller - not the vehicle) the 5th wheel brakes would be as aggressive as possible but,not lock. On downhills, I then used the 5th wheel brakes, only, to keep speed in check.

Careful adjustment of the trailer brakes seems key. Not enough would seem bad as the trailer is going to want to "push" the tow vehicle and possibly cause a "jack-knife" situation under low traction conditions.

Use lots of caution. If I were going to error, I think I would want to error on the side of the trailer brakes being a bit too aggressive. Does anyone have experience with pulling their Pod in the snow? We are planning a cross country trip, most of the route will be along I-80 and it's possible we'll run into some snow at the time of year we'll be going (Oct mid--Nov beg). We have a Toyota FJ 4wd and a 2013 179, if that makes a difference.

Any experiences/thoughts/suggestions, my Podder friends?
