Author: Commander203
Subject: 6792
Posted: 10 Sep 2015 at 8:06pm

As stated in my prior post that I would return for a report on my buying experience with RV Nation here in Ohio. We were originally planning on our pick up around the 7th. Our 179 didn't arrive until this morning.

The service department jumped right to work on prep and we started our walk through at 1pm. Can't say enough good things about the way this purchase went. First let me say there was no mention of completing the sale prior to the prep or walk through. As a matter of fact we were allowed to watch dealer prep prior to our walk through. All persons from Brannon our salesman to Mike our prep/demonstration person in the service department were extremely professional and courteous. One of the other guys in the service department, I assume the service manager, didn't get his name, came by and informed us that if there was anything we were not satisfied with just let him know and it would be taken care of. I am totally satisfied with the buying experience, best I've ever experienced. Not like buying a new car at all.

Now for the trailer. My wife and I dug really deep based on the information in this review, which by the way was extremely helpful. We found only a couple of the issues that are listed in this review, so thanks for the heads up. Otherwise, watched it being prepped and cleaned really good. Maybe that was because we were present, but a good job was performed.

Mike did the hitch set up, appears to work just fine from the dealer back to the motel we eventually booked due to being tired of the wife's relatives. I had already installed a P2 brake controller but Mike got in the TV and made a few adjustments and the drive back to motel was great. I had an E2 hitch installed. We will be getting on the road back to Texas around 0500 hrs tomorrow.

I hope this review of Jeff Couch's RV nation helps someone about deciding whether to purchase from them or not. Now we'll just see how the POD holds up.

We only had minor dealings with the finance guy as we had a cashier's check for our purchase so can't comment about financing other than he tried really hard to sell us a $1649.00 four year extended warranty. Of course we refused thanks to this forum. I did read here or on the other one about other extended plans that are much cheaper if we decide to purchase one.

Looked thru the following models (two of some models - 178,179,183G. There were several issues I noticed similar to Jays photo. Screws over driven splitting wood strips, trim, etc. screw height on same parts might vary a quarter inch or more, several cosmetic trim pieces barely fastened on, basically just sloppy workmanship, etc.

Was randomly looking over sealant around outside of window on a 179, looked like several inches of sealant missing along one side, look like around top of window someone had put a few inches of silicon after the fact to stop a leak but done sloppily. And these are all new 2016s.

Meach

V6 Yea I was aware of a camper like pulling a sail down the highway. We're kind of at a transition point when it comes to camping. Think the wife is ready for more comfort both traveling and camping. Have thought about getting a small popup for our motorcycle (currently pull a cargo with tent, gear, etc), we camp with a lot of folks that have em. then could also use her smaller matrix or the truck and still pull it around when weather not the greatest. Have considered a larger pop-up behind truck (less wt & less wind drag) which then led to considering a small hard body like the rpod. Want to make sure we'll use what ever we get to justify the $, etc.

While traveling around during my recent trip to UP of MI it was a pain to get stuck behind a slow RV with nowhere for them to safely pull over. Folks use the 2 lane highways up there like they are the interstate going 65 - 75 even when speed limit was 55 I saw more LEO's up there more than anywhere else on my trip. On my bike I could slow and pull over on shoulder If I wanted which was fine for a motorcycle but not RV's when I saw semi's, etc coming up fast behind me. Traffic would be heavy in both directions in the middle of nowhere which made it hard to pass.

I have a brother with a fairly small hybrid TT a couple hours away, I may go pull it around and see how my truck does. Got a brake controller I wanna hook up first, have had it a while just haven't gotten around to fooling with it. Been having too much fun traveling around on my MC. :)

Meach
Bought my truck used, came with hitch (5k lb rating) & flat 4 which was what my boat needed.. Had been using a chevy van to pull boat but it died and thus got a truck. Later I learned more detail about diff. between with or without tow pack, some dealers were known to stick a hitch on em and say it had the "tow package". The only thing I might add would be a tran. cooler. Is that with or without the tow package? We've been looking around at small light trailers to pull with my 07 prerunner w/o tow package. I did vacuum up some saw dust under the sink area and water heater during the first winterization and did some expanding caulk around exterior drill holes. I did have to replace the LP gas hose limiter on the second year as it was hard to get the furnace to light for an initial warm up, but other than that no over tight screws, split wood etc. I think the earlier pods when demand was lower may have had better Q.A. Forest River had better take note or they will go the way of General Motors and domestic car builders in the late 70's and early 80's when the japs spanked them soundly with quality good priced vehicles. Forest River are you listening ?

One post was interesting about where the unit was built as, again, I have none of the problems you show. I also have to keep in mind that I paid $12,600 for a 178 with everything. The Casita would have been 18k but........
I would like to sell my Pod and buy a Casita but my wife loves the extra room, slider, etc.
After 38 years of marriage, I just do what she wants/says as she is always right, gorgeous, intelligent, and I would be nothing without her.
Rich
We just got back from out west camping in WY, SD, ND, and Montana.......no problems.
Author: HuronSailor
Subject: 6792
Posted: 13 Aug 2015 at 9:46am

Some of the problems you found have been an issue for years and can be blamed on suppliers. FYI, I hear Dometic is running around at the Goshen FROG rally fixing beeping fridges like crazy. This is after I heard a FR rep in WV say it couldn't be a widespread problem or else Dometic would have issued a recall. Ho-kaay. Your solution to the beeping fridge seems to get to the root of the problem and I urge you to share it on the Facebook group. FR can't control these things, and there are only so many supplier of RV parts. Still frustrating to the owner though.

Others may show some sloppy workmanship but don't really hurt anything IMHO: sawdust and junk in hidden compartments, jagged slivers around holes in hidden areas caused by the use of a spade bit rather than a hole saw. Wiring that looks like a plate of spaghetti. I found these things in my pod too, and that's just because it's a mass produced RV.

Others things are unacceptable and are the kinds of things I saw during a recent walk-thru of the new models in WV. I saw those over-driven screws causing cracks, and that is un-excusable and would be a deal breaker for me. I saw staples that are so far off the mark they completely miss their target or are left uncovered by trim. That's sloppy workmanship pure and simple, maybe caused by rushed employees. Gaping holes way too big to compensate for sloppy placement under lights and around pipe. Part of my job was to make assembly jigs and fixtures for auto assembly and I can tell you they are in desperate need of some at FR. Raw edges of exposed fabric sticking out. How could anybody see that and think it's OK?

I have found and fixed a few of these in my old pod, but didn't have nearly the problems you have. I sealed some holes with spray foam and tightened some screws here and there. I also had to countersink and reinstall some of the screws in the rdome track. Other things that have come up over the years are to be expected and are normal wear and tear. Broken drawer slides, cracked light covers, leaky window weatherstripping, loose trim.

Another FYI: the original pods didn't come with fender lights or a rear light bar, so when they were retrofitted after a recall I found the wiring to the fender lights blocked the rdome skirt. I added inline plugs to the wires on that side so I could pass the skirt through that area. Just have to remember to plug them back in before we go back on the road. I'm happy with the quality of my old pod, and the kind of issues you point out are exactly the thing that keeps me from trading it in on a newer model or upgrading to a larger model. I'm afraid of the problems that may crop up.

About the only thing that really bugs me about my pod right now is that those da@#med graphics keep peeling off. FR replaced the front ones for me (well out of warranty at the Goshen rally a few years ago) but now the sides are peeling off. Not just FR's problem though, if you look around a bit you'll see that's pretty widespread.

The RV industry must have some very good lobbyist in government because the way many campers are built it should be against the law. We ended up having to rebuild the entire front dinette section of our camper and part of the kitchen. My wife and I actually fell through our dinette seats a cardboard box would have been stronger. I called the production manager and sent pictures his reply was they are building them better. Well the V Cross Vibe division of Forest River is no longer in business and has been discontinued. One can only wander why or how that came to be. I told them their construction reminded me of the quality of the Yugo automobiles once sold in this country they were considered the most unreliable automobiles ever sold in the United States. I feel sorry for those who work very hard to save money to buy a camper and it is very poorly built and need of repair before it leaves the dealers lot. But there are some good quality campers and some well built r-pods it all depends who has been hired to do the work at the time they are built.

That's would I would loose if there were issues that are deal killers.

Actually, the only reason we are buying from them is of course price, but we are attending a big motorcycle event in Huntsville, Al from 3-6 September. I figured they are only 6 hrs out of the way to save $3000.00 is worth the trip. I probably would not have went that far away to make the purchase if we weren't planning to be that close. I did have them put in the agreement that if the pod is not available for pick up on the 7th of Sept., I would receive a full refund. I didn't want to take a chance on it not being there by the time we return to Texas.

Anyway, I know it's not going to be perfect, I just hope for no deal killers .
