When I worked full time my $ boss... used to say "never go down alone, always take someone with you" " harder to fire 2 people than just 1".... Although when there is just 2 around the pod.....

We do the same thing Travis with the slide, but also with the hot water. Hook water up, ask the boss to turn hot water tap on and let me know when she has water coming out of the tap. That is indeed true.  If you ever Pod with us as we setup or breakdown camp you'll hear me yell into the windows or the DW yell out of the windows..

Maybe you'll end up like us then and not need to modify it Gypsy, I don't think we'd ever forget it again, I'm betting you wouldn't either?  If you do though, be sure and let us know what you come up with, it's threads and discussion like these that clue in the next round of owners new to their Pods to be aware of this possibility.

LOLOur first year, I had a metal sign which I thought I had hung securely on a wall disappear, but really didn't notice it.  Until......

Put the slide out and heard this awful metal crunching, quickly found the issue.

Since then we've just become diligent about checking it.  It's part of our open/shut process.  This includes checking the slide on the outside, because uhm one time I caught the grill rack in the slide as it was pulling in.

So now, it's power on, water on, check slide for sink hoses or misc items.  When we close up to go home, power off, water off, check slide inside and out before retracting.

DW usually keeps an eye on things inside while on a trip so it's easy to know nothing is in the way on the return.  When arriving at camp we both are conscious of what we store on the floor in travel and look for it before sliding out.

For us, we learned our lesson and developed a routine to remedy the situation without any physical type of change needed.

Sure do miss that sign though....

Have never noticed this "open" area on my 2012 177 pod.   Next spring when I get the pod out of storage I'm going to have to check this out.... Now all I have to do is remember to check it out... I put the pod into storage Oct 29th... won't see it again until May 1st... This is a "wish list" item, so it really doesn't matter who likes the suggestion or not except Forest River.  The point of this sub-forum is to present ideas to FR that will make things better or easier for pod owners (and in this case it sounds like other RVs have the same problem).  We know FR comes here, and we know some suggestions made here have made it into production, so it works.

Multiple members have come down on both sides of this issue, both sides have valid solutions.  Discussion is great.

But let's end this discussion before feelings get hurt and bad things happen.  We've never locked a thread, let's not start now.

If you read my post, I agreed with you and Podster that this isn't a normal issue with most slides.  It looks like enclosing that area on both sides would solve it.

Seems like it should work.  You might also look at a cloth store for elastic panels or tape.  Seems like I've seen it in 6" or 8" widths.

This wouldn't be a problem for most slides, which have solid sides.  It sounds like this design exposes a hole that is hard to clear.  I wouldn't want to get on my stomach with a flashlight every time I wanted to open the slide.  I don't need to do that with the slide on my Salem - I make sure I have enough room outside and then I push the button.

I'm curious how this caused the counter to crack.

And who am I? just a guy with common sense I guess. I also keep my fingers and toes clear of car doors when they open and close and stuff like that.

There are MILLIONS of travel trailer slides on the road, and it seems to be a non-issue for, well, most of them. Again, yes stuff can get caught in the slide. Check before moving it.

I agree with you gypsy! Unfortunately a lot of trailers with slides have this problem--including my Kodiak. I particularly have to watch out for dog toys, chew bones, AND our small dogs! Even with a headlamp and on hands and knees, it's a little hard to monitor. How would you prevent it? The slide moves.. seems obvious to keep yourself and your stuff out of the way...

During my walk through the service tech pointed out that this area must be inspected before extending the slide. To do it right, you have to get on your hands and knees with a flash light and take a good look. The area with the netting in front below the fridge is stationary.
