   I had the aluminum, I didn't have the rubber or plastic for mud flaps. I did the same with our r-pod and they seemed to work with no problem. I guess it all came down to why spend the money in buying mud flaps when I had aluminum that would work. My Uncle is a engineer and he called them fender extensions and that is the way I think of them. I like the rack, and I may have to do the same.  No spare tire on my Salem and I don't want to hang one off the rear since I want to put a proper receiver hitch back there for a cargo tray.

Were you getting excessive spray off of the tires?  I always felt bad for whoever was behind our pod with all the spray it would fling.
