My first trip was crazy- 2000 miles along 1-40 through Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Lots of uphill and wind. I did about 60 mph most of the way, with LOTS of trucks passing. A bit nerve wracking, but I got used to it. The truck drivers are professionals, I felt like they knew how to pass safely. Hi Paul,
Hope you enjoy RVing. We started about 10 years ago and it has been terrific. We currently have a 179 pulled by a Honda Pilot. I try to keep our speed at or under 60 mph. We are one of the few RVers we know who have a sway problem occasionally. Texas winds and tractor trailers passing us have caused this sway. I find less sway and more comfort keeping the speed down. I don't think 60 mph is "too slow".

Here is a common mistake to avoid. The r.pods are low to the ground so when entering places with a little dip or a bump up or down, take it really slow and on an angle.

Wow, driving all that way from Oregon to buy an east coast model? You don't want a Hood River edition for some reason? Did you price one at Blue Dog RV there in Idaho/Oregon? Were they that much cheaper in Iowa? Just curious. I hope you have safe travel and no snowy passes on I90 or I80.

I bought my pod in AZ. 1 day drive down, 1 back. I loved AZ. Speed limit of 75, I set cruise on 80 & got 11 MPG. Hit CA where the speed Nazis live, so dialed back to 62ish, got 13.5-14 MPG.

I laugh when people comment about trucks passing. I never get passed by trucks, I'll run with them. Cars always pass in CA, we have a 2 tier speed limit...

That's just me, YMMV & all that.

Lug nut torque AND tire pressure - although you'll find over time the lug nuts will "seat" and won't need to be checked as often. Every time you stop for gas touch the tires and the wheel hubs with your hand. If it is too hot to keep your hand on it then you have a tire pressure or bearing problem.

Be prepared to be passed a lot. Especially in the west where the speed limit can be 70-80 mph.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful. Its good to know I can travel at 65 without any problems. I want to let trucks pass easily but don't want to get rear ended by going too slow.

I will add checking lug nuts to my daily check list. I am used to driving in snow but our travel plans don't include winter driving at this point.

Personally I keep my max around 65 when cruising. I did spend a few hours last summer pushing 75 so we could make it to an attraction before it closed - but even with a large tow vehicle and a WDH it wasn't a comfortable experience. I wouldn't do that again.

I towed my pod through a blizzard 2 years ago for a winter campout with no problems. Obviously I wasn't going 75. Or 65.

We travel a lot on I-75 our average speed is about 60 mph and there are many trucks and cars that pass us. Sometimes I may drive a little faster to help with the flow of traffic. I learned the hard way and a pointer that all should remember check lug nuts before a trip and during long trips. My wife Lisa and I are new to rv-ing. We are both retired and plan on seeing a lot of the country so we bought a 179 last fall. Our first trip will be from western Massachusetts to Key Largo in April.

Can anyone give me some advice on safe travel speeds? Our route will take on Route 81 through Pennsylvania, Virginia and then Rt 77 over to I95 in Georgia. Trucks travel at 70MPH on Rt 81. I plan on going around 60 which i hope is not too slow and will give trucks and easy time to pass me. Is this a good speed? Generally, what sped is a good speed relative to the truck speed limit?

Also - if anyone has pointers on common mistakes for new comers, that would be helpful.

I have also downsized from a 5th wheel...it was very comfortable BUT unable to get into many of the smaller campgrounds I love to camp in. Love the flexibility to pod will give me.

We bought our 2015 179 in April and just love it! My favorite is the rear kitchen...lots of prep space. Only one trip so far....had a leak issue Cry

so it is in "dry dock" waiting for repairs. It's too hot in Texas to camp in August anyway, so I'm being patient! BUT, checking in on in the forum for mods and cool places to go. Grand Canyon in the Spring.

Welcome, you'll really like the 179. We also downsized from a 5th wheel. It took a little time to adjust to less space. We realized that we had a lot of stough in the 5th wheel that we didn't use and we aslo had duplicate items. We are very comfortable and glad we did it.

Just getting ready to drive to Iowa to pick my new 179 up.... leaving from Oregon. Been reading many of your post and decided to buy one... It will be a nice size for the two of us, wife and I. We sold our 5th wheel some time back due to the 7-8 miles per gallon... so were downsizing. It will be a welcome change.
