Absolute FIRST "rig" was a borrowed tent.

From that, progressed to a Cobra camper conversion, built into a Dodge C300 Tradesman van--slept 4 or 6--if they were really friendly, or family--had sink, stove, refrigerator, forced air heat, and PortaPotti. Had a perfectly MISERABLE time with front brakes not releasing, but it was absolutely GREAT to pull into a campground on a cold, rainy day, and not have to get into the weather at all. That little furnace heated that camper almost past the tolerable point.

Next came a small Coachmen pop-up, which we towed with a 3-liter diesel engine Mercury Lynx. Towed it cross-country (Montgomery, AL to Edwards, CA). Everything was cool--oh, wait, not inside the car: NO A/C--but crossing the mountains in West Texas was a memorable experience. Managed to make the pull without having to downshift all the way down into 1st gear.

In the near future, we'll be taking delivery of either a 178 or 179. Looking forward to getting back into camping again. I guess my first tent was really just half a tent!  On bivouac, you had to "buddy up" and button your shelter halves together.  (You each had one of two tent poles, and half the required tent pegs, too.)

Later, after commissioning, six or so junior officers could fit in one staff tent.  Big improvement!

As for civilian camping, a two person tent with rain fly and inflatable mattress was OK up to a point, but
our 2013 RP-177 sure fits our "over 60" bodies better!  (The Campin' Cocker Spaniels like it, too!)

I tent camped in our backyard as a kid, then later met my future wife, who had a tent! We tent camped a few years, then bought a used 1985 Coleman Columbia popup camper with rooftop A/C on a whim. We never used the tent again! Then while at an outdoor RV show last fall, we saw an Rpod. It was love at first sight! We took delivery of our RP178 on March 29th of this year. To date we have hauled that little camper almost 5,000 miles. We Love our Rpod!! Used a 1951 Terry until recently (still have it for winter trips) but wanted to extend the season a bit in our hot desert. Rpod can get into all the same places our tiny Terry managed. Always tented started on the East Coast and have moved to sunny Ca. camped with our three kids all over the Sierras and most of Ca. First RV our new 179 R-pod ..wow nothing like waking up on a cold morning and just pushing a button for the heater and starting the coffee pot !! 1976 Ericson 23. Purchased new in 1976. She had a brownish-red hull and I named her Cinnamon Girl

My first RV experience beside Tent camping was camping with the Olsons. They had a new 1965 cattle truck we put a trap over, nailed army surplus bunk beds in and headed to Minn. Lakes. Quite the sight at the Dairy Queen. Cattle door opens and 6 kids jumped out.
Later they up graded to a converted School Bus.  Camping, Great Memories..

5.5 insbrook 8' truck camper stand up but not over the cab.

As you see Truck Campers my Favorite, Wife enjoying the room and potti in the R Pod. She's Happy - I'm Happy...

That sounds like my 2003 F-150.  It gets 13 whether on the highway, in town or being pushed by something else.

Litany of 50 years of RV'n:

1. Memorial Day weekend of 1964 my wife and I honeymooned in a borrowed pink and white Shasta camp trailer.

2. 1961 self converted Ford econoline camper van--Marwayne has nothing to worry about!

3. 1964 Orange VW van with "Great Pumpkin" scripted into its 2x10 rear bumper. Oldest son slept crosswise across front seats. Baby son slept over engine in rear, and wife and I slept on the VW van's floor. Yes, we are short. Hippie days, huh?

4.-6. Series of 3 P/U campers hauled by F250.

7. 16' dual axle Aljo TT--Chevy S10 tow rig.

8. 20' Layton TT-F150 tow rig- wrecked 'em both.

9. 22' Arctic Fox TT-F150 tow rig-quality trailer, but heavy.

10. 18' Chalet folding TT-terribly constructed piece of junk.

11. RP 175-Toyota Taco, Tundra Tow rigs--Tons O' Fun!

12. 20' Kodiak-Tundra tow rig-more room, but not Pod fun.

Yup, we'll be celebrating 50 years of marriage and RV'n this Labor Day by camping again. The trailer probably won't be rockin' near as much as 50 years ago.

About 1973ish-  very small Coachmen pop up camper, had a wing/bed that folded out to each side.  Only amenity was an ice chest!  Pulled it with an early Toyota HiLux Pickup that barely had enough power for itself.  Oldtimers might remember them, the turn signals sat on stalks on top of the front fenders, looked like foglights.
Prior to that- tent camping or sleeping in the back of that Toyota pickup.

Mine was a 1976 Aristocrat with a bed in the back of the truck as well. Room for all the kids. The only thing that worked right was the ice box lol..Took this thing on some pretty crazy trips.
